Instantcrazy's Journal, 18 December 2014

OK y'all listen up! I know there's a few of us on here dreading the long winter and wishing Christmas was over, and basically stuffing our faces getting ready to not starve during the season of no green. ANYWAY...This is what I decided to do this year...You can take it or leave it, and just so you know I'm an atheist with Taoist tendencies. I decided I was done with Christmas and I was gonna kick it old school, as in Pagan.

THIS SUNDAY DECEMBER 21st is the winter solstice, and the longest night of the year. Historically the winter solstice was celebrated on the 25th of December according to the Julian calendar, hmm... The solstice was celebrated as the returning of the sun and the NEW YEAR! After that day the days start getting longer and the sun starts to return to warm the Earth. That day is considered a day of rebirth. A day of optimism. A day to let it all go and look forward to everything anew. A day when the dark relinquishes itself to the light.

I decided this year my christmas tree, the evergreen a sign of life and renewal, is a solstice tree. I've decorated it with fruit light up with white lights as symbols of the sun, and pine cones to represent the earth. I made an evergreen wreath with colorful ornaments as a symbol of the circle of the year. I will fill my house with herbs and incense to cleanse it for the new year. I intend on the night of the solstice to light candles outside in my driveway, as many as I can find to fend of the darkness. I will burn a yule log outside and write down all the things I want to release from this year, and throw the paper into the fire. I will be free from all the negative things that have happened this year. The new year will be clean to make a fresh start.

Yes, I am that weird neighbor everyone will be talking about, but I don't care! 2014 was a horrible year for me. So many bad things happened. I need to release this year to eternity and move forward to the new year. If celebrating the new year at the winter solstice means I get to do that 10 days before everyone else, then HELL YES! If you want to have your own little new year celebration on Sunday then GO FOR IT! Light a candle. Burn your own little release list. This is a great day to celebrate!

"On the longest night, we look for the light, and we find it deep within"

I love this. I've always been interested in how others celebrate. Although I'm not atheist, I find many of the pagen traditions very peaceful. I was thinking about doing something special for the winter solstice. I think I'll try something similar to this. Thanks for sharing!!

The history is interesting how the pagan and Christian celebrations are intertwined. Much due to medieval rulers insisting that the church was to be accepted by all. Love your ideas on your decorations and celebrations. No where to burn a log at my house..LOL except in my smoker. Kids will have the wood stoves going at the homes will be at, though.

I congratulate you on your knowledge a lot people are not aware of the history behind the Winter Solstice as this is considered old school and they are only aware of the popular culture. I am not an atheist but a well read person as I believe everyone should have an open mind and learn to read knowledge for themselves and we are taught not to pass judgement on anyone but to accept everyone as our brothers and sisters. You are acting in a positive way and showing your acknowledgement to mother earth and the changing seasons. This is your celebration of love and light in your way enjoy and continue to move through life with love and light. Namaste!

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea! Especially the having a fire and burning away the old to let in the light. Sunday. Yes. I may be joining you at my own fire pit.

Agree with all others commenting before me - wonderful of you to be so well informed of the choices you choose to make. You're proceeding with purpose. Like the idea of cleansing the house for the new year - cleanse your home, cleanse your spirit. Thank you for sharing.

As a Christian, I don't take offense at how you are celebrating this year. Christmas, for me, reminds me that each year is a new beginning (thus Jesus being born a baby). We get to celebrate, whether it is silently (similar experience to what you have written in your journal) or joyfully with lots of friends and family. Merry Christmas to all.....and to new beginnings.

Namaste! Merry Yule and Blessed be! I have to admit I was nervous posting this. I know there are a lot of Christians on this sight and didn't feel like having to defend myself. Needless to say I have not told my UBER conservative family of my plans. They already tell me I'm going to hell, this would probably get me an exorcism. Thanks for supporting me everyone! I just feel I need to celebrate something worth celebrating instead of celebrating consumerism and stress. I picked some sage out of my garden tonight (I didn't plant it, it came with the house and it just hasn't died yet). I'm excited to burn that throughout my house. I also hung some above my front and back door. Just felt like it, and it's pretty. I'm just kind of getting all of my ideas from the internet. Not a huge Pagan presence around here. I've never done this before. I'm excited about starting a new tradition. I'm really excited to know that some of you will be doing this with me as well. Sunday it's just going to be me and the girlfriend. I like feeling like I'm part of something bigger.

I love your idea of hanging sage. I'll have to try to get starts from the pineapple sage I brought in the house so I can do more than one plant. It gets red berries in the fall and looks so pretty. I'll also try to remember this idea so I can plan ahead when I cut the herbs back in the fall.

Had I seen this in time, I would have been on it with you. I'm ready to let go of 2014 too. Sending good thoughts for a wonderful 2015! P.S. I replied to your note from Thanksgiving.

You had me thinking yesterday on my 2 hour drive home about the winter solstice and how it is basically the natural new years. Interesting as the day after Christmas is normally the beginning of my effort to start anew for the year, not new years day. Mmmmm some pagan groups celebrated the solstice on December 25th, I fit that.
