Happy Thanksgiving US peeps!

I am thankful that this community is so supportive and willing to provide insight/guidance. It certainly is a game changer.

Been busy this past week in anticipation of Saturdays carpal tunnel surgery @ 12:30 EST. Working to get Christmas tree up and plugged in (but of course can't find the plug which is likely buried in my boxes of decorations). I figure decorating can be done one handed. Have tried to complete most of my daily tasks one handed in anticipation of the weeks to come. Oh my, a bit of an adventure. Childproof bottle caps, like those on supplements or med bottles. Impossible. So got the pharmacy and veterinarian to give me non child proof caps, and the supplements I've covered with tin foil caps. Pilling the cat was another biggie. Need two hands and he doesn't like pill pockets. So the magical interweb suggested liverwurst. A hit! Another issue down. My magic bullet blender for my protein powder, bot a rubber strap to wrap around the bottom of the cup that I can put my forearm on and then twist open with the usable hand.

My neighbour agreed to braid my hair, but thanks to tiktok, found ways to do that one handed. Won't be pretty, but will be one sided and functional (yay). Either that or chop my hair off (which remains an option as it will grow back to waist length in 6 years.

Slicing and dicing my veggies? Waiting for Black Friday to see if the Kitchenaid 13 cup processor comes down in price as it is one of the few out there that has a dicer, a slice size selector and a strong enough motor to handle my root vegetables, yet doesn't cost a bomb (currently at $229+tax CAD)

As I discovered again, the world isn't a very mobility/disabled friendly place. First go round was when I was wheelchair bound in 2017. Many places that show as accessible, particularly washrooms, really are not. Kudos to Walmart as theirs most certainly are. The rest of their store? Not so much. Had to ask random strangers for help in that case and to reach items on higher shelves. A reacher helps with light items but anything heavy or in glass, not so much. Also was surprised how invisible one becomes when wheelchair bound. People in general seemed so tall then. When I met my caregivers from convalescent care few years later, I found that they were generally my height or less. Perspective is everything.

Am I a bit nervous about the surgery? Sure. But the thought of possibly living pain free post recovery and possibly having feeling in my fingertips restored is worth the risk.

Over and out

You certainly have a lot on your plate! But your life will be so much better after recovery from your surgery. Having limited hand use is no joke. Rest assured that we are all pulling for you and looking forward to seeing your progress!

I was in a wheelchair in the past - the longest for a month and a half so I know your challenges. Be sure and take help when offered and thank them when they do. I've been on both sides as a care giver and one needing care. I am wishing you a speedy recovery.
