I'm confused. I know this might sound a little OCD, but it is really bugging me. I bought a container of hummus yesterday and the label says a serving is 2 TBSP and that the container has 8 servings. I had some last night and diligently got out my tablespoon and measured out 2 TBSP Today I did the same and then I looked in the container and realized there isn't even enough left for 2 more servings, never mind 6! Have I been measuring wrong? Are there really only 3-4 servings? I will admit that my TBSPS may have been a bit rounded, but NOT THAT MUCH! It just annoys me because I realize I must have been eating more than I thought. Tomorrow I will make sure to scrape the top of my measuring spoon so there is no question.

I m no expert on measurements, but would say ALL of us consume more than we think UNTIL we diligently MEASURE and. RECORD , which you are NOW doing. You are going to be fine. Keep on keeping on!!!! :)

It's Joseph's, which is delicious. I realize the more likely culprit is me, rounded tablespoons probably equaling double servings. I need to scrape my measuring spoon! Lol

you also have to realize that sometimes the # of servings arent true in the container

The best way is to weigh a serving. Every spoon is different. Even better: make your own and then you know exactly whats in it. I started a couple of month ago and would never by houmous again :)

I was thinking of trying to make a batch tomorrow, and that is good advice about weighing; I think I have an old weight watcher's scale somewhere!

Are you using a silverware table spoon? because that is not going to give you an accurate measurement, especially if its rounded. 2 TBSP is a very small amount of hummus, if you use a measuring spoon and a butter knife to take exact measurements I'm sure you will find that the label is accurate. I do the same thing with peanut butter, and 1 serving is barely enough to cover a piece of toast.

I think we all puzzle over this. I may as well double the amount I think I'm eating because even keeping my calories within and below my RDI and with exercise I still don't lose weight. It's difficult to run around with a set of measuring spoons and cups and scales just to monitor calories.

Measuring by the spoonful can be problematic I find it much more accurate and easier to go by the grams that are provided.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Yes it is difficult. From now on I think if I can't measure perfectly I will add a little extra in the food diary just in case.

The serving is based off of the serving weight. Even though it says 2 Tbsp, it has a weight listed next to it, in parenthesis. The nutrition information is based off of the weight, not the tablespoon. If you go by weight, you will have 8 servings. You will be very surprised to find that the weighted measurement will be much less than 2 regular tablespoons. However, if you only end up with 4 servings, then to be accurate in your food journal, each time you ate it, you would have to record it as TWO servings consumed. No matter how you divide the actual portions, one container contains 8x the calorie amount, fat, carbs, protein etc. So if you eat it in 4 servings instead, you must still account for total calories of container divided by 4. This is a common way that people consume far more calories than they believe they are. Peanut butter is the same way! You should ALWAYS use a kitchen scale if you are seeking accuracy. It may be a pain, but it is very eye opening.
