The "J" word; or, How Reality TV has Ruined the Word Journey.
I watch a lot of reality tv. I am more attracted to real stories, no matter how obviously edited and scripted for television they may be, rather than dramas and sit-coms. No matter what the goal of the show (to get a husband, to lose weight, to become top chef/designer/artist/whatever) it is always a "Journey."
I kind of giggle now whenever someone says it. But really, this is a journey. This path to health through weight loss. As an English teacher and a writer I try really hard not to traffic in cliches... but this one fits. So, I am going to go ahead and use the J word.
I have lost and gained weight so many times in my life. I have probably lost well over the 300 pounds I weigh now. But, I can't stop this journey. I know that if I ever begin to believe that it can't be done, if I ever just give up and stay fat and unhealthy, then and only then will I have lost. And that is one destination on this journey that I am just not willing to take.
