A little discouraged.

Been exercising harder this week, and finally into the groove of it where it feels good. It's a challenge but not a miserable one. Strength training is going well, to where I have enough strength to pay attention to good form and focus. And I've been running longer, upwards of an hour, also biking and rollerblading.

The scale however, is not in sync with this good workout vibe. Today I weighed .1 lb more than I was on Monday, why I do not know. It's a little disappointing, I was hoping to make good headway this week, and felt as though the improved exercising and calorie intake of 1250-1400 was sufficient to keep me on a downward trend.

Boo.

Not sure what the problem is, will have to just keep on keepin' on. I kind of regret stepping on that stupid scale now! WTF?!

Maybe you need to be eating just a bit more. It's a recurring theme I hear around here. Go too low on the calorie count, and you stifle your weight loss. I've had my best dips in weight, the morning after a good old fashioned Cheeze It indulge.

Hell yeah,.. now THAT is what I wanna hear! :D You have a point. I might have to up the intake just a little, even a day a week and just see what happens. Thanks Amy :) best wishes to you.

I concur. Eat more to fuel those work outs. Happy advice! Also, it is very normal to experience a weight loss stall or even a small gain when you start a new exercise program. Your muscles retain more water during this time as they work to repair themselves. If you stick it out, you'll see loss again once you get over the initial shock to your body. If fact, I'd be willing ot wager you will see a significant loss if you stick it out. And it will certainly benefit you in the long run. Remember, the scale is a crappy measure of progress in the short term. Take note of how your clothes fit and how you feel. Don't let the scale be the only way you define success.

I agree with Kate. For example, when at the beach, you don't see people walking around w/ their weight number tattooed on their forehead (although that would be very entertaining :). Instead, what you can see, if how people LOOK in their bathing suits. I would rather weight 180 lbs and look smokin's hot w/ a toned body, than weight 150 with nothing but flab. Here's my thought on the whole calorie intake thing. As a mechanism of survivial, our bodies are programmed to be as efficient as possible, whenever it has a chance. So that's why when you the same exact work out everyday, it looses it's effectiveness after a while. Same thing w/ food. If you eat the same exact amt of calories every day, your body gets used to that and learns to be maximally efficient at that level of caloric intake. So you have to keep your body guessing and allow your calorie intake to flucuate thru out the week. Good luck!

And you said above that you're in a work out groove that "feels good". Well right there, that's awesome! Your feel better b/c you're healthier and in better shape for all the hard work you've been putting in. Because after all, we're here to be healthier, losing weight is just one small part of that venture. :)

You guys rock, really. I sure appreciate both of your perspectives, and such balanced health centered (rather than just weight, or appearance centered) points of view. I guess part of my hangup with "successful" journaling involves getting all anal retentive about numbers! numbers! numbers!, but you both made good points, our bodies are dynamic and not necessarily meant for a robotic 1200 cal/day intake. Thanks a million girls! Sometimes the solid advice and encouragement is just the nudge a person needs to see the light and keep soldiering on rather than get discouraged.

Sure thing. And you know what I've found on this website here, is that the best way to get support is by simply journaling every day. I see very little activity on the Groups and sometimes a bit more in the Challenges. But really, the journaling is where it's at. If you're in the habit of doing a journal entry most days, people will check in on you regularly. Then you can actually just post any questions in your journal and someone is bound to answer them for you. You're doing great, hang in there! :)
