8/20/12

Well, I went to my physical therapy assessment and behavioral assessment today for the surgery. Things went well and I learned a few things.

The behavioral assessment--She asked me a lot of questions about how I dieted in the past, why I chose to have the weight loss surgery, and what my expectations were. I then had to answer a 568 question true and false questionnaire asking various psychological things. She seemed pleased with how I'm doing thus far.

The physical assessment--I found out several things. I have no problem with strength or flexibility. I do have some issues with balance due to an old ankle injury and I need more cardio exercise. Her goal for me is to walk 30 minutes per day even if it's in 5-10 minutes intervals and work up to 30 minutes consecutively. Since I have back pain when I'm walking she gave me some abdominal exercises that should help strengthen my core muscles to help support my back. She also gave me some tricks to help with the knee pain when going up or down stairs.

I'll have to read through all the information I received and start on my exercise program. The next appointment I have is my second visit with the dietician in September.

I was a little disappointed yesterday. I weighed myself and saw that I gained half a pound and couldn't understand why since I had stayed within my calorie count and was very good. I then remembered that it is that time of month when I gain a lot of water weight and then re-weighed myself today and saw that I had really lost 2 pounds which I was happy with. I hate feeling beholden to the scale numbers and looking for approval through a scale number. I stayed on track, but my diet today has been sporadic since I have had so much to do. I should have eaten more protein with my meals. I'll do better tomorrow. Julie

congrats to your assessments so far! sometimes you just gain some weight. please don't let this make you sad! mostly it is just fluctuation! and if it is this time of the months....it is even more possible to have a gain even if you're stick to your plan! look forward, you do great!
