How much protein is actually in your protein shake ?

I just read the results of lab analysis on various supplement brands whey protein powder products and it's shocking!

Nutri Tech Anabolic Mass Builder states 37.5g protein per 100g BUT the lab analysis shows it only contains 7.5g protein per 100g!! That's a deviation of 80% less than what is stated on their labeling and is illegal since companies are allowed only 25% deviation from stated values.

Pro Nutrition products that I use are not listed so I might be switching over to one of these brands of products on the list that offers the best protein for my money.

Results are posted on Dischem's website. The link is :

I read the results and I am so disappointed. You just don't get what you are paying for. We use SA Supplements, which came out the worst of the worse. We buy from a direct distributor and therefor it is cheaper than any other. But what is the use if Protein is not what you get? Hubby and I are going to try and go within once our buckets are finished.

Bren I'm also very disappointed in the results. They didn't have Pro Nutrition products in the testing so I'm also going to finish up what I have and switch to one of the tested products on this list. A scary thought is that if the protein values are inflated then what about the carb values on low carb products that could possibly be high and labelled as low values.

Looking at the various products and comparing them, I think I'm going to switch to the USN Hardcore Whey gH as it seems to suit my needs and still in the same price range as what I'm currently purchasing. It also contains creatine, taurine and tribulus which is known as a natural testosterone booster. A single serving is 26g protein, 3.7g carbs and 140 calories.

Seems better BBO. What I also considered in the decision to try and not use whey, is that a IFBB Judge and trainer, try not to use whey, because it is in fact not natural... and if you think what artificial sweetners and what not they add to it to make it yummy.... I think the most natural was the Egg Protein Whey, but it was so awful. Not recommended either LOL! But you can only eat so many egg whites too... so I am not promising that my change will be forever. hahaha

The artificial sweeteners are negligible since they are small amounts of it and I only have protein shakes about 2 to 3 times a week. I prefer real food since I love eating :)

I use Manna Health, I find it really awesome, no added sugar, no GMO's and best of all no chemicals. Their range can be viewed at www.mannaplus.co.za its don wonders for my nutrition and their shakes have 24g of Protien per 100g with no added sugar or preservatives

Tanya I wouldn't trust those whey powders after seeing these test results. I often felt that brands like USN were overpriced but now I can see why other brands are cheaper. In South African law, a food product's label is only analyzed by the Health Department if there is a complaint about a food product and that gives companies a chance to get away with this sort of nonsense because the general consumer is not going to be able to analyze the food product and see if the stated values is legit. I've worked extensively with food labeling regulations as I have imported food products in bulk before. Now I'll make a more informed choice on the whey protein I use. Thankfully I don't rely alot on protein shakes as opposed to those who consume 3 or more every day of the week. I prefer getting most of my protein requirement from real food itself.

Desiree has the Manna Health products been tested by an independent lab to verify its stated protein value is legitimate? 24g Protein per 100g is too less for me. I need a protein shake that gives me at least 25g per serving or 70g or more per 100g.

It is so strange that I am reading your post now as yesterday I spoke to a friend that is in the fitness industry as a personal trainer and told him that I don't manage to make my protein intake and don't like shakes all that much. He told me to stay away from protein shakes so yesterday I made a decision to stay away from protein shakes and try to eat whole foods. @Bren I buy the organic egg whites form woolworths then I measure out 2 egg whites and use one whole egg and make omelettes with it and it taste great.

Better that way Yolanda. Once our buckets are done, we done. It is convenience, but at a cost! In comp season I separate my eggs to have ±4 whites and 1 whole. But I don't buy the ready eggwhites, my doggies love the yolks. ;-)

Bren I did not want to waste the yolks that is why I buy the eggs whites the are not badly priced and convenient

This was one of the best decisions I made last year: eat real food!! But I still do also have my protein powder in my cupboard :-( It is just for those days that I just don't got around to real food :-)

For sure Yolanda. We are 300km from a Woolies, but many of my friends in the city buy the egg whites.

Good read ,I am currently using Nutritech Peanut Butter Flavour Whey ,great taste .However maybe I should go back to USN

Today I purchased SSN Performance Whey instead of USN Hardcore Whey GH. The reason for my decision to go for SSN is because USN uses soy protein and the milk whey is less than 50% of the protein powder. Soy protein is known to create estrogenic effects so that pushed me towards my choice of SSN.
