dbdmom's Journal, 06 April 2015

During Lent, instead of giving up something specific like, sweets or potatoes or TV or Facebook, I gave up "excessive calories." I set a calorie limit of 1200 calories per day and gave up "everything above 1200."

With the exception of Sundays, I adhered to this faithfully. On Sundays, since those are celebratory "feast days," I ate whatever I wanted. As much as I wanted.

End of Lent: I lost about 10 pounds during Lent. And that was with some pretty crazy Sunday eating. Yesterday was no exception. Whoo-hoo! We had an awesome Easter feast yesterday.

Now that Lent has ended, I decided that this has been a pretty effective way, for me, to be more healthy with my eating. Post Lent, I'm going to allow myself more flexibility in my daily calories (no sweat if I go over 1200), but I'm still going to strive for keeping my overall calorie count around 1200. It's about 80% of my RDI maintaining weight, which should keep on the weight loss path. I might change up my "feast days" to be Saturdays or Fridays, depending on the family schedule, but mainly enjoying one day per week to give in to all my cravings.

What was interesting to me during my Lenten journey was that I was always so sure that I was going to cram every off-limit food item I wanted into my Sunday feast day. And although my caloric intake was certainly very high on those days compared to the rest of the days of the week were, I just found that I couldn't eat everything I wanted to eat in one day. I couldn't indulge in all that I wanted to indulge in. Maybe I am actually getting accustomed to making healthier choices and smaller portions!!!

Today? I have saved enough calories to allow myself one more slice of chocolate pie that my oldest daughter made and brought over for Easter Sunday. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and chocolate pie later tonight, and I will still be under 1200 calories for the day!

[BTW--went to Village Inn for lunch, and I have had the hardest time trying to enter lunch info into my log of what I actually ate. I resorted to adding food items from some other restaurants in an attempt to track my lunch.]

168.5 is what my scale still says, even after feasting on Easter Sunday! I go back to my endocrinologist in May, and I hope that I'm down another 10 lbs by then. Won't he be surprised when I go in for my 6-month check-up and I'm 30-40 lbs lighter than I was in October?! I'm very hopeful. Here's to watching the scale continue to march down into to the 150's!!

I have found during the past few years that doing something like this during Lent was the best way. I found that if I gave up a certain food that I no longer wanted it, even on Sundays. Started my weight loss journey on Ash Wednesday last year and it has worked amazingly well. My Dr was amazed by the weight I lost just from March to August. You should have seen his face last week with another 70 pounds down. For some reason Lent and my diet didn't work this year. I don't know if it was because it started rolling get before we had a month-long blast of winter or what. But I got back on track last month. March seems to be the month for me.
