mintybonbon's Journal, 27 March 2015

This has been a tough month to get through. I have followed my vegan diet for three months so far despite conflict with my family who no matter how much I have tried to explain what vegan is, they try and sneak animal products into the food I eat. I love my family but sometimes they do not understand. There is a stomach bug spreading around school which my friend and I have got which means I have been ill for a long amount of time (too weak to do much exercise). My parents blamed it on fruits and vegetables so they have cleared the house of everything but junk food: butter breads, chocolate and candy. I am too ill to leave the house and buy vegan food / fruits so I guess this is going to be difficult. I respect that they are doing this because they care for me but at the moment I am not sure I can recover eating these processed foods especially since my body is not used to it anyway. I hope everyone else is having a great month! ^-^

You can choose your friends but not your family. Put your foot down.Stand up for yourself. Hope you feel better soon. xx

@Mintybonbon, it seems strange that your family would remove fruits and vegetables and replace with candy. I don't mean to be presumptuous but your profile says you had a problem with purging a few years ago. Could it be that your parents are concerned about eating disorders and want to provide these foods so you don't waste away? Of course this sounds like something that was in your past and you've moved on from it, but your parents could be worried about it coming back.

Thank you both for your comments! @GilesBathgate, my parents never really knew about my eating disorders and they do not know what eating disorders are. I think they just are misinformed about fruits and veg.

Sorry to hear you are struggling - maybe teach them how fruits and vegetables can be washed thoroughly - if they think you got sick from "germs" on the food.

Your welcome. Not sure I agree with veganism mind. We are naturally predatory carnivores so V is unnatural. Also ...when it comes to animal welfare...if we were all Vs there would be none (Animals that is). The only really cruel part of farming is the milking industry......so yes avoid milk. x

it is so hard when you are reliant on others for your diet. can you do a food shop online and have fruit and veg delivered? or get a friend to do shopping for you. you need those vitamins and minerals to recover. good luck, get well soon x

@bigfatbastard Its irrelevant what we 'naturally' are, or were. People can live a healthy lifestyle on a Vegan diet. If you can get all the nutrients your body needs then in what way is that unnatural? I don't get your comment, "if we were all V's there would be no animals". I am pretty sure animals were living for millions of years before the development of agriculture...

@Mintybonbon Have they never heard the phrase "Get 5 a day", five fruit and vegetables. Or maybe they have heard of vitamin C? Strawberries, Oranges, etc all very good sources to antioxidants that help get over colds. Fruit and vegetables are also very good source of fibre that help keep your digestive tract in order and move things through your body and get rid of tummy bugs. Perhaps you could encourage them to watch the following nutritional course video with you: http://y2u.be/3rW40XmJgGk

@GilesBathgate I would suggest you have a read about what makes us human. http://www.livescience.com/23671-eating-meat-made-us-human.html

@GilesBathgate (Quote)I don't get your comment, "if we were all V's there would be no animals". I am pretty sure animals were living for millions of years before the development of agriculture.. (Unquote) Yes and also before man. However in this day and age the majority of animals on this land are kept for profit and if you take away the incentive then they would not be kept. Do you think the banning of fox hunting was good for foxes ? No. the species are now in rapid decline.

@bigfatbastard can you put the link in a tinyurl since FS breaks with long URLs. I suppose what I am saying is it doesn't matter whether we are carnivores, omnivores or herbivores. Its not 'natural' to use medicine and live to 80. As an intelligent sentiet species we get to decide what's right and it doesn't have to be based on what we are. Its the "is/ought problem"

this is getting very philosophical, we may get to decide what is right, but we so very often get that wrong

@drullae, Thank you for the tips ^-^ I'm not joking if my parents see a single fruit they will throw it out. Luckily, I traded a lot of chocolate in the house with fruit from my friends so everything is going back to normal and I am recovering. @bigfatbastard, thank you for your advice but I am vegan because of the many health benefits I do not personally experience with a animal-product diet I had before. @GileBathgate, thank you for the link I have spoken to my parents but they are brought up in a culture where meat, egg, rice and few fruits make up their diet. No worries - I have obtained a secret storage of fruits. I do agree with the points you have made (there is the argument that our ancestors ate meat so therefore we are made to eat meat, however, there is actual evidence that our ancestors did not eat meat, mainly just fruits, plants and nuts - maybe killed an animal occasionally or ate a few bugs. Animals back then were also lean and not breed to be as fat yielding as possible like the present and also not injected / feed antibiotics therefore being better for our ancestors. @bigfatbastard I respect your opinion about eating meat (I'm glad that your body works well with it) but I have my own evidence and personal preference about veganism ^-^)

@mintybonbon, we may all be biologically the same, a human is a human afterall. but...we can see from the vast range of food intolerances and allergies that affect different people in varying degrees or not at all, that although we have the same make up that make up can behave very differently from person to person. my brother is crippled in agony if he eats bread or pastry, yet i who have very similar DNA (he is my brother after all!) can freely eat grains (although i don't) and just get a bit bloated. If your body functions best as a vegan and you are getting all the vits and minerals you need then you are healthy. trading chocolate for fruit...you go girl!! LOl

@drullae, Well said. Your poor brother, that is so unfortunate! Thanks for the encouragement ^-^
