blurose411's Journal, 18 February 2015

So today was my first day on the Atkins diet and I did good. The only cheat was a spoon full of fried rice at diner and half of that was egg. Not having sugar was easier today than I thought it would be. I actually kind of enjoyed the taste of black coffee, though I do miss the tea. I've eaten more today than is normal for me. My kids are proud of me because I actually had 3 meals and a snack instead of just 1 meal. Even though I ate so much, my over all calorie count is still very low (903) but I'm at a loss on how to increase it without increasing my carbs or resorting to just meat. I do have a slight headache this evening I think it is from the lack of sugar and the low over all carbs. But this is part of the journey, right? Tomorrow is a new day, I can only hope it goes as well as today.
I have made up my mind that even though I'm on a dreaded "diet" I will not let food become a stress. In the past when I was dieting if I over indulged I would stress and then eat even more. I refuse to do that to myself this time. That is why I had that rice at dinner. Fried rice is one of my favs and watching my family eat it was torture. So 1 spoonful and no guilt. I got savor the taste without the freak out. Besides if a diet can't handle a bite of over indulgence then what kind of diet is it?
I hope everyone else had a good day as well. Keep up the good work everyone. And happy journey!

Last week on my first week I had headaches, extra water helped alot. I also got some stevia which is an herb sweetener to help with the coffee though I mostly drink tea. The first few days I was out of sorts but by the end of the week I felt much better. Good Luck!

Yea, I just consulted dr.google on all the possible withdrawl syptoms. So far the headache is the only noticeable one. I'm hoping that since I've been actually dropping my sugar intake for a while I will miss the worse of it, but time will tell.

I don't do a lot of sugar or processed food to begin with so I think I managed to skate by most of the first week stuff thank goodness. I am going to give it a month and see if I can jump off this plateau.

Blurose411..I too am doing Atkins and have been since Oct. Yes the first few days you may feel like you have the flu, tired, achey and the headache..but it does go away and you will suddenly start to feel pretty good. I've had cheats since Christmas so my weight loss since then hasn't been great but as of today I am back on track. Even with that i didn't gain, I kept count of what I was eating and stayed most times within my calories and carbs. I am always under my calories too and I don't worry about it as long as I stay within my carbs I am happy. You can actually have a tablespoon of heavy cream in your coffee, I think its .5 net carbs. I've given it up though I don't mind my coffee black, but it took me about 2 months. Good luck on your journey.

Atkins has a diuretic effect. People that get headaches and body aches is typical of the "Atkins Flu". Drink a cup of bouillon the full salt type daily. It will help with the headache etc. In glancing at your menu I see you must be doing the Atkins 40. The one thing I see is to watch your fat. Atkins is a high fat low carb. For me to lose weight I have to be above 60% fat. Fat with every meal. I try to keep mine close to 70%. Fat will also make you feel full. Good luck on your journey. I have found Atkins to be easy to follow and after being on it since May 2014 I feel great.

k9gold, I hadn't considered my fat when I planed my meals today only my carbs. I thought I shouldn't worry one way or the other when it came to fat or even calories. I was some what concerned about my calories just because they are so low. Boy, if I need to watch cards and fat this might be harder than I thought. As to the feeling full, as I stated above I normally only eat 1 meal a day so I haven't have any trouble staying full more a bit of a problem feeling too full. Nicholaiz, I'm glad to have a weight lose buddy but let's try not to compare (it might back fire). You have given some great advice and encouragement so I feel blessed to have you on my side. Lindar51, thanks for the heads up on the cream. I'll keep that in mind if the black coffee starts to get to me.

Oh, man; I just caught my mistake, thanks k9gold for bringing it to my attention. I thought I was following the Atkins 20 but I way undershot my carbs. I must have crossed lines somewhere and got myself good and confused. Well, now I need to find 5.8 more carbs for the day.

It's easier all the time. To few calories will also stall your weight loss. If your body thinks your starving it holds on to everything. Add bacon to your breakfast. 4-6 oz of protein with meals. For breakfast I have two scrambled eggs with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 3 pieces of bacon. I have a hard time doing veggies in morning but if you don't put your veggies in. The coconut oil really helps boost your fats. You can also keep fat bombs around when you need that boost of fat and calories.

Way to go, Blurose411, hang in there. It is a learning thing, so you will make some mistakes along the way. The former eating method also included mistakes, right? LOL.

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement. I am going grocery shopping tomorrow and I'm not sure where to start. If there were one thing on your atkins diet you couldn't do without what would it be?

Olive oil, grass fed butter, raw almonds, eggs, avocado, caulifower (to make mashed cauliflower like potatoes). I do a high fat, moderate protein, low carb program so I love the healthy fats. I also eat uncured bacon with my eggs, too.

Eggs, flaxseed flour (good price at Walmart), cheese, veggies.

Blurose, I would go onto the atkins website and download the Induction food list.It will tell you what you can eat. Also they have many great phase 1 recipes.

Thanks Jenny, I have already done that but am feeling a little over whelmed. At this point I have my shopping list and I'm feeling a little more confident. The most trouble I'm having right now is getting enough veggies. But I feel good about my strategy and will have to see how it plays out.
