Deb_N's Journal, 10 August 2014

For a woman my height, my weight should be 118-131 pounds to fall into the normal range for large boned women. No doubt about it, I have large bones and come from a family of large women. I set my goal weight at the high end of the normal range, at 136 pounds. I am not small boned and for me to be wishing to be 118 pounds would be a fantasy that is insane. [My 136 lbs goal weight was from a different weight chart that I was looking at but don't know where it is now. Not going to change my goal weight now. Don't want to be in the red zone all over again!]

Determining frame size: To determine the body frame size, measure the wrist with a tape measure and use the following chart to determine whether the person is small, medium, or large boned.

Click on my journal to read the rest. It has the Men's wrist size as well and the height weight chart I was referring to.

Women:

Height under 5'2"
Small = wrist size less than 5.5"
Medium = wrist size 5.5" to 5.75"
Large = wrist size over 5.75"

Height 5'2" to 5' 5"
Small = wrist size less than 6"
Medium = wrist size 6" to 6.25"
Large = wrist size over 6.25"

Height over 5' 5"
Small = wrist size less than 6.25"
Medium = wrist size 6.25" to 6.5"
Large = wrist size over 6.5"

Men:

Height over 5' 5"
Small = wrist size 5.5" to 6.5"
Medium = wrist size 6.5" to 7.5"
Large = wrist size over 7.5"

Here is the chart I was looking at that shows the different weights for the size of bones for women. Sorry, guys, you will have to google your own.

So Deb, do you need to lose weight or gain height?
10 Aug 14 by member: eddie1261
Thanks for the chart Deb. I am a giant. My wrist measures 6 3/4" and I stand 5'8". I've towered over family and friends since I was 13. I'm okay with it but I sure wish my size 11 shoes weren't so tight. ugh!

Eddie, are you joking again? We can't change our height because our bone size is the default size we have. The only reason I put the chart [not to make anyone depressed] is because a lot of us have an unhealthy idea about what our goal weight should be. Let's be realistic. We all cannot be at the lowest weight for our height.

When I was younger, the goal weight for my height was 105-120 lbs. I was 130 lbs and unhappy that I was not normal. Now the doctors and researchers have changed the chart from 108-143 lbs. Other charts have different numbers. If I remember it, I will ask my doctor in November what my weight should be.

Thank you Deb for taking the trouble to put the chart up and all the other things you do to inspire everyone.

Were you joking asking if I was joking? LOL!!! I always thought about myself as being the ideal weight for a man 7'9" tall.... Unfortunately, dad was 5'6", his dad was 5'5", my mother was 5'3"..... no height in my family at all.

I am 5 foot 4 inches, the last time that I got to my weight 138 pounds, was in 2000, I had people telling me that I was to thin, some people came up to me and asked me if I had cancer. My massage therapist told me , please do not get a thinner, you are too thin. I have a medium frame, according to that chart. I gained up to 145 and people said that I looked better and stay around that weight. Right now I weigh 158 and my physical therapist said I look good at this weight, so its sort of confusing. I think I look good right now, because I am still curvy, I like curvy when you are old, because if you loose to much you look like a saggy skin wrinkled old lady. I am 64 years old.

Congrats on the 50 pounds! That's so exciting! I love the "one foot in front of the other" mentality. That's how I've approached my lifestyle this time and it's working out so great. BTW, I'm large-boned, too - 6" wrists at just under five feet tall. Always wanted to be one of those tiny short girls, but alas...

That chart says I should weigh between 135- 148 since I am small boned. Don't really think I could get that small. The point is I am healthier now that last year at this time. Congrats on your weight loss!!

skwhite, thank you. I hope to lose 15-20 more pounds. You are an athlete and have muscles that others do not have, so you would weigh more than a sedentary or lightly active woman. You are doing great at your goal weight!

Very interesting post Deb. Thank you for sharing. It has confirmed what I was beginning to suspect, that I had an artificially low target weight so I am going to amend straight away :)

Just keep in mind, all, that weight affects the wrist size. When I was 100 lbs heavier, my wrist was 1" larger, which would put me at a large frame instead of a small one.

You're right on. I've see so many different chart and been told so many different weights for my height that it's amazing! I used to be 5'4",but now I'm more like 5'3". In the military I was told I had to weigh 120 lbs back in 1991. If I were to weigh that now I would look positively sick! I decided to go the high end of the chart as you did, 135. I've been there once or twice so I know it feels amazing to be there!!! I just never stayed there more than a year with Jenny Craig. The weight always came back up and stayed around the same 165-170. So, from a big boned woman like yourself, whose close to your height; know you can do this and know you will feel amazing when you get there!! Just remember, one day at a time :)

Oh I always suspected I had large bones, but never had that confirmed before :-) thanks, Deb.

I just went to the doctor last Thursday and I am 5 feet 2.25 inches so I am going wit the high end of my range too, the mid 130s. I remember the days I was 115 and I looked awful like deathly ill. I wouldn't want to be there now. My wrist is 6 1/4 so I guess I am a medium build.

So true. I'm only 5'2" with a 7.5" wrist measurement, that puts me in the extra, extra heavy frame category. I know it sounds like an excuse to some, but to give people some perspective even when I was 15 years old and only weighed 105 lbs, the measurement around my rib cage, just under the bust came in at 36", so I completely agree with you, that frame matters a whole hell of a lot. I am aiming for the top end on my chart too. Keep it up, you are doing great!

Deb_N, Thanks for the chart. It really helps to see a weight range vs. a goal weight!

You are doing very well and that is an inspiration to others!

Strange, because I have wide shoulders & hips and a tiny wrist...
