losinit1655's Journal, 28 September 2015

Happy Monday, FSers!

Regardless of the result of my weekly weigh-in today, I was already planning the following journal post . . . I’m finding more and more the scale to be a rather arbitrary and even almost meaningless measure of progress. The Idiot Box has proven to be a fickle – often manipulative – little minx. BFFs one week following some ‘slacking;’ arch nemesis the next (despite disciplined eating and exercise). I was ready to defer to clothing size as a better measure of progress and success, but even that has some reliability issues – I can comfortably wear a size 8 Kasper skirt but also a size 10 Parisian skirt. Yet another size 10 skirt (unknown manufacturer) cinches my waist like a corsette-turned-torture device. I’m thinking I’ll just employ former Supreme Court Justice’s Potter Stewart litmus test for obscenity/hard-core porn and apply it to my body image aspirations: “I know it when I SEE it.” That, AND develop some more specific-minded fitness goals (running pace and distance, increase squat reps and add dumbbells, e.g.).

Also, I’m less and less enchanted with other vernacular often used like ‘goal weight’ – it feels like it’s loaded with a ‘one-and-done’ sense of “Yay! I reached goal and now I’m FINISHED with all this eating healthy and exercising tripe!” That is a dangerous trap which could result in another ride on the roller-coaster of diet & exercise/weight loss & re-gain of which I’d say I’m a season-pass holder and ‘frequent flyer’. Lately I catch myself using phrases like “finish line in sight” that I fear can subliminally sabotage my efforts to view (and incorporate) this new relationship with food and fitness as a way of life vs. a temporary means to some finite ‘end.’ From now on, I’m referring to my ‘goal weight’ as my ‘stay weight’ – and my ‘stay weight’ will be determined by my body/fitness NOT vice versa. Essentially, I’m striving to wear a bikini with not so much as an ounce of self-consciousness when my family returns to the beach in May.

Looks like I might be activating that gym membership/personal training Groupon sooner than I thought . . . it appears I am nearing a single-digit size in clothing so it’s time to start focusing more on toning, firming and building muscle. Since I’m fairly tall (~5’ 9”), I’m aiming for ‘long and lean’ – yoga and Pilates classes may very well be in my future. I can always get my cardio in the ‘great outdoors’ (when the weather cooperates) and save other more targeted workouts for the gym. The Groupon is good for a 3-month membership, so that would get me through the holidays AND avoid the New Year’s ‘resolution rush’.

Have a fantastic week, FSers!

Stay-weight is good, I like it! I also have trouble with the concept of a goal weight. I think it's more like a healthy range that I want to reach. I have an idea that it would be good to fit into one more size smaller clothes, as that should mean most of the fat would be gone 😀

ROFl!:)...I think I've just met the queen of justification!! What is amazing is your loss is what I'm able to achieve in a normal week! If your goal is not to feel self conscious in your bathing suit then don't worry about weight, size, or inches...work on seeing yourself as God sees you! When I know I'm eating healthy, exercising regularly and like the way I look in my clothes then quite frankly I could care less what anyone else's opinion is...that is when you won't feel self conscious any longer! You keep up the great work :-)

Nice Loss! The scale will likely always be a primary measure but as you've said there are others that are just and maybe even more important. I agree with you regarding goals or goal weight. Have done this long enough that I see goals as stepping stones to reach and keep on going, not a place to stop. The journey changes but doesn't end.
