Good Morning FS Warriors! The fight against fat continues!!! For the 2nd week in a row I have had less than a 3 pound drop. Now granted, last week included my Thanksgiving indulgences, but I ended up with only a half a pound gain from that due to Fasting the day after. So, it has been 4 weeks since I upped my protein from around 68g per day to 120-140g per day. Also right after Thanksgiving I began lifting heavier....I got some higher rated resistance bands so I quit the 10 lb dumbbells and started my workouts with 20 lb bands. My workouts were too easy, these newer ones are not. So you folks who have experience in this area answer this question. At what point in lifting heavier do you start to see muscle growth? I am wondering if my slowdown on weight loss indicates that I have stopped losing muscle mass? So four weeks of higher protein, two weeks of intense (for me) strength training, am I building muscle or just not losing what muscles I have? I feel good, other than the tender spots from using neglected and overlooked muscles.

I have finally taken new measurements, the last measurements I took were pre-covid back at the end of July. I'm using my first set to show overall inches lost. There were areas I did not measure in the beginning, that are being measured now, they will be at the bottom with no comparison numbers.

6/7/23 12/7/23 Total inches lost
Neck - 17 15 2
Bust - 54 47 7
Under Bust - 41 38 3
Waist - 48 39.5 8.5
Hips - 60 53 7
R Thigh - 32 27 5
L Thigh - 32 27 5
R Knee - 27 22 5
L Knee - 28 23 4
R Bicep - 19 13 6
L Bicep - 19 14 5
R Calf - 18 16 2
L Calf - 19 17 2
Abdomen - 50
Buttocks - 49

Total inches lost since July - 9 Total overall - 61.5

So, what I am seeing here is loose skin dropping...gravity, you can't escape it, so my hips are now carrying the loose skin that dropped down from my waist and abdomen. My knees have caught the loose skin dropping down from my thighs, it's all wiggly and jiggly, but I can feel harder muscles beneath the jello, where before the muscles seemed flaccid. There has to be some type of toning and possibly growth happening there! Overall I am happy with my progress, I think the changes I've made were necessary and in the long haul, successful. Yes I slowed down my weight loss, but I improved my nutrition and hopefully I'm on the road to building strength and muscle. Only time will tell. I am grateful for my progress, for all of the things I have learned from the people on the page here and all of the fantastic support and love I get from you guys! Ya'll have a fast-astic day if you are so inclined!

That is very good on those inches. That Waist number sure tells a story

LOL Yes Liv, I could get into a smaller pants size if my hips had not caught all that droppage. Hopefully it will shrink too over time. 58 pounds in six months is a really fast loss and not enough time for skin shrinkage to equal the loss....time, it's all about time.

WOW! Great job with the inches, Deb! I love your hourglass figure! I am so top-heavy, which was not the case when I was younger. I held all of my weight in my hips & back side back then. Oh, how age takes its toll, but it beats the alternative any day! I stalled on the scale for a month or so when I first started strength training, even gained a little in the very beginning. I use a body composition scale that measures muscle mass, fat %, etc. now. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but at least it gives a trend to show progress. I no longer pay too much attention to total lbs.

...and you should see me walking around the house when I'm alone feeling for glute muscle! 🤣 Still squishy, but I feel "hardness" under there, as you say! 😁

That’s an impressive amount of inches lost! I think you are doing great and for your question about heavier weight, go for it. I have loose skin in the tricep area and I found when I lift heavier I can get it under control. It’s still there but not as saggy.💜💪🏼

I will probably never have a flat abdomen because of the colostomy and the cantaloupe sized parastomal hernia I have, but they won't fix it till it begins causing medical issues, which is ok by me because every surgery I can skip makes me smile. I have compression garments that squash it back in some, but they were purchased when I was around 200 and ATM I can't even drag them over my butt....that will come...once again, with time, meanwhile I just look lopsided, which goes along with everything on my left side being somewhat larger than my right. My dominant side is right, so I tend to work it longer and harder than my left, so I need to correct that and start giving my left side more to do, no slacking you guys!! LMAO!

That is amazing !! If you are sore from working out it is likely you have some muscle inflammation going on. That is a good thing as it reflects the breakdown of muscle and its regrowth. But inflammation is also retention of fluid in the muscle as part of the healing and rebuilding process.

LOL @ Zen! You give me such hilarious mental images!! I do the same thing...but I don't wait till I am alone, I was feeling my butt and hips and poking my quads...hubby said what are you doing??? I was not paying attention to him paying attention to me! LOL I say....I'm checking for muscle under all of this...he says...did you find any? I threw a dish towel at him!!!

muscle gains can be measured in grams its a slow slow process but stopojg muscle loss by Increaisng the Intensity of your training and upping protein is a big possibility 👍👍

Hey! I passed another tens!!! Wooohoooo! Funny how when you are kinda disappointed in the weeks loss you don't pay attention to what really matters, it's going DOWN BABY!!!! Celebrate, Celebrate....dance to the music!!!!!

Thanks OTB, I think I am in agreement with you, too early for growth, but stopping the muscle loss is highly likely....which is great! That is what I was aiming for!

@Deb 🤣 Have you ever heard of Jeffy? He's this puppet on YouTube. He has this song called "You Wanna See My Pencil". https://youtu.be/PjAZKWxkYEU?feature=shared My son used to walk around singing it ALL the time. When I first started feeling the "hardness", I started singing to the hubby "Wanna Feel My Muscle" using that tune, and place his hand on my glute. Still do. It is hilarious to me! 😂 This past weekend, he reached and was feeling on his own. He's not the one to give many compliments (or say anything about my weight, one way or the other), but I caught him checking me out on 2 occasions this weekend. 😌

Thanks HoneeBuns, I missed your comment up there! I am sore this morning in places that I didn't know had places to get sore, and I am expecting more of that in the future. I am also sore in my bi's and tri's which were getting a good (so I thought) workout with the 10 pound dumbbells, but apparently they had gotten used to that, and what I am doing now doubled the weight and has me using areas that were not being worked at all previously. I'm feeling it today! And today I broke my fast, so some much need protein is headed for the sore spots so today is a rest and recover day...aside from my PO workout...the package load has increased so lots of bending and lifting and marching back and forth to come during my 4 hours of work there! I'm lifting and carrying packages that weigh anywhere from 5 to 75 pounds....Post office weight max is supposed to be 70, but Amazon seems to have some misaligned scales and some of the stuff we get - Beds in boxes...weigh more than that.

Honestly… I never see much muscle growth no matter how I change my routines. I worked with a trainer for 1.5 years focusing on powerlifting and strength went way up but muscle mass seemed barely different. A lot of it was neurological adaptation, I’m sure, along with some tiny muscle gains. It’s real hard for me to see a difference, for all the effort I put in. I just keep doing it because I do see strength increases and I like to feel stronger. And because at this point if I keep doing it I can have a lot of “eat whatever” days with little bad consequences.

Thanks Morticia! I'm also feeling pretty awesome, I left the 240's behind....how freakin cool is that!

@ddrudds Honestly, at your weight, you probably have a pretty low BF% and may need to actually have a small calorie surplus (along with the protein requirement) to see muscle growth. Kudos to you for being consistent & noticing other benefits of strength training! 😊

Gains right now are not really a goal for me, I expect that will change in the future, but right now my goal is more on stopping continued muscle loss while losing fat, it's tricky a real balancing act from what I have seen so far. I need to be more consistent with adding protein because I did the opposite of Zen, when I saw my calorie count going above and beyond my limits....I did not drink my shake and came in under my protein goals...so, I have to bite the bullet and keep my protein up, even if it increases my calories for the day....I'm sure I burned it off with the exercise that I am not logging...LOL I'm still going after those BMR numbers by not logging my workouts. I am stubborn when I want to see something in an experiment!
