I'm going through "The Change"...lol...not that change...I've already been there and done that...this change is the change of lifestyle.

I've done well on my meal plan since the start of "the change". Even yesterday, I feel like I did well. Yesterday was my DIL's birthday. Now, she is not aware of my new health plan so she gave me her traditional birthday dinner request - needless to say not a healthy choice (I don't have a reputation for healthy cooking...yet). She also placed her order for birthday dessert - ice cream cake.

I made all the requested dishes and all the while I tried the think about how I would handle my own meal during the party. Did I want to fix myself a separate meal or join the others in the party meal? After thinking about what a lifestyle change means to me I decided I would eat dinner and dessert with the rest of the family. I was VERY mindful of everything I ate. I tried to imagine what celebration meals will look like in the future when I am on a maintenance meal plan. With that in mind I watched the portion sizes and made sure I did not go back for what for me is the traditional second helping.

This mornings weigh-in was a little discouraging, but not enough to send me back to my old eating pattern as it would have in the past. I feel good about "the change".

Hipaagrammy, nice that you made DIL what she requested. Also good that you ate mindfully. My house with all the different preferences of my girls, spouses, and pile of grandkids I do a buffet. I make a selection of dishes based around a theme, say chili. (it's a favorite) so I make a meat chili, a chicken chili (one daughter doesn't eat red meat), have regular salad stuff, crispy tortillas, homemade rolls, a fruit salad. Someone usually brings desert, my kids know I don't usually make desert except for maybe brownies, ice cream, or watermelon. That way I can also choose what fits me.

Wholefoodnut, that sounds like a good idea for the future. I just wasn't ready to share my new meal plans with my extended family. GoodMan knows, and he's supportive. I wanted to wait until there was more of a physical change in my appearance before I shared with my kids. I raised 6 boys on Paula Deen style cooking. I'm known for using lots of cheese, butter, sour cream, etc in all my cooking. So when someone wants to splurge on food, they usually think of me. For a while I even wrote a cooking blog, and I don't think any of the dishes would fit my new lifestyle. About 20 years ago I went on a protein shake diet and lost a lot of weight. I became a bit of a zealot. Then about 15 years ago I went on a very strict low fat diet. Again I became a bore, talking only and always about my diet and weight. This time I want to do things differently. I want the changes to be unspoken but apparent. I want to be comfortable and happy enough so that no one will wonder if I'm ill. I'm reading everyone else's journal entries to satisfy that desire to over-share. We will have a number of family gatherings in the next few months - when we get together GoodMan and I host all the family, 28 of us in all, for the whole weekend. I think I'll use your suggestion of buffet style meals with lots of choices for everyone. Thanks!

Dreamcatcher, I know what you mean. My Grandpa used to say, "Glad to see you come, glad to see you go." Now I know what he means. Right now I have 6 extra family members living with us. I'm so glad we could host them these last 8 months, but I will have to take a month or more to recover when they get into their new home. Lol!

You did good! Yay for making what your DIL requested for her birthday. You did well cutting back from what you would normally have, so that's a good step. Wholeffodnut's idea is a really good one. Even if it's something like taco salad on the side, and choosing taco salad over the high carb, high calorie food and ice cream. When your grandkids see grandma who they love and admire munching on taco salad they may do the same. It sends a really good message. Unfortunately, when people say birthday or celebration, we've been conditioned to think...cake, ice cream, sweets and alcohol!

Unfortunately, when MY people say "going to Grandma's" they've been conditioned to think food...food...sweets...snacks...treats...it's time to condition them to think of Grandma's as a healthy place...and so I change.

Hippa... are you on any particular food program. Low carbs, High Protein. There are lots of recipes that are absolutely yummy that you can make and still be eating healthy. Have you checked the recipes here?

Warmed my heart a couple weeks ago. One of the triplets popped up with; "gramma we love your cooking because you make it from the real thing, and you let us help you cook". some conversation between kids going on that I wasn't paying much attention to.

Another thought is that you can adapt those Paula deen type recipes to be healthier, her son is proving that on TV. I change things all the time. I have 400+ maybe 500+ cookbooks and adapt recipes to fit how I eat all the time.
