No movement is always better than a red arrow! Two weeks until I head to Santa Barbara for my work conference/mini vacation. So what's the first thing I see this morning when I sign in to my computer. Lightening Strikes shut down Santa Barbara Airport last night. Great!!! Like I'm not stressing already. Breathe Jean, Breathe.

Lent Diet
As each Christian church follows different rules, there is not a universal “Lent Diet“. Orthodox Christians still give up both meat and dairy products for Lent. Remember that the idea of fasting is to exert self control. Self control is absolutely vital when you are trying to lose weight. However, most generally follow these diet rules:

No chocolate - not too difficult
No cakes - except for birthday's, shouldn't be a problem.
No cookies - no issues here
No soda - no issues here either
Nothing made from sugar, no sweet breads, pastries or candy - NOT GOING TO SET MYSELF UP FOR FAILURE ON THIS ONE.
Eat no luxury foods – avoiding meat while eating lobsters and smoked salmon misses the point of Lent! - Not a problem for poor people
No alcohol - only issue I foresee is during my trip to CA
No cream or ice-cream - not too difficult
Many people just chose some things to give up for Lent. If you enjoy chocolate or alcohol, then these are things you should give up during Lent.

An alternative is to follow a more tradition vegetarian diet for all of Lent, 40 days of nothing but vegetables, fruits, pulses, nuts and seeds. Another approach could be to follow a prehistoric diet, similar to what humans ate before the development of agriculture.

So Christians do still follow very strict diets, such as liquid only diets. For these a Maple Syrup diet is sometimes followed, as this provides a simple energy drink that means that you do not have the pleasure of eating but still receive some energy to get you through the day.

Fish On A Friday
Many Christians allow fish on a Friday during Lent as this helps to ensure that a more nutritious diet is followed, and also keeps fishermen in business during Lent.

Let's see what I choose to give up:

Except for #5, I'll do my best to follow through on this, with minor exceptions like during my trip to CA.

What do you think you can give up for the next 40 days?

I’m going to select one item from my closet and dresser each day during lent and donate the 40 items at conclusion

Hey Highland Heather. Not a practicing Christian either, but thought doing this would be good for my soul (lol). Yesterday was Fat Tuesday aka Mardi Gras, Today is Ash Wednesday and the kick off of Lent. The information above was from: https://www.motleyhealth.com/diet-and-nutrition/what-is-a-proper-diet-for-lent if you want to check it out.

A change in diet is always a bit easier during lent. I went vegan during lent back in college (just to see if I could do it). People didn't give me as hard of a time if I said I was eating that way for lent vs it being a personal challenge.

Interesting, I was raised Lutheran and we never changed our diet, but I like it. 40 days without a specific food is doable. Most of the items on your list are already off my woe, however, now sounds like a good time to drop red meat (if your look at the price per pound, definitely a “luxury” item).

Hey Chow Moore - wishing you luck with Lent. I haven't eaten mammals since 1988, but in deciding to do this really drove home how there's barely any meal I have that doesn't have some type of poultry in it. So it's going to be a challenge but I'm going to try. April 20th is a long way off but Seafood and eggs on Friday will make it much more doable.
