HCB's Journal, 20 October 2015

Greetings Best Buddies!

I hope everyone is having a healthy new week. I am doing OK with my nutrition plan and exercise...I can feel the beginning of the "Winter" drag starting though...it seems I just want to sleep more - I know it is seasonal.

This past weekend we went to see a great play and had dinner - I ate a few things I normally would not eat. The neat thing is I did not really gain and I did not continue eating "stuff." It was one meal, and then I was back on track. That is true behavior modification for me.

Words of the Week:
"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."
I am dedicated, determined and diligent.

I feel the change of seasons with you. It's getting hard to drag my butt out of bed in the morning. Glad you were able to get right back on track. Keep up the good work.

That is great! I know a lot of people don't like winter but it is my favorite season. I actually get sad when late spring summer arrives. Weird, I know!

I'm with you HCB!! I just want to hibernate LOL. Energy levels drop and want to head for bed early and sleep late. Good for you on your night out!

You rock, HCB! You gave yourself a little slack, but didn't sit there mindlessly stuffing yourself! Personally, I love Fall! Low humidity, a cool breeze, and my fall/ winter hats and scarves.

We had our first snow flurries over the weekend and automaticaaly began to obsess over thick soups, stews, pastas & homemade bread... the kind of food I like when I hibernate. Seems I'm going to have to rethink some of my favorite cold weather dishes to minimize fat & carbs. That and some seasonal behavior modification. Hope everyone is well. HCB - you always inspire!

@Carol in kinderhook! You are so right - we seem to crave carbs as the days get darker. It has something to do with serotonin - carbs are sugar so we want to feel energized!

Hmmm, aside from moving to Miami, the most wonderful diet solution would be to take a 4 month vacation/sabbatical to the Caribbean, yes?

So true...cooler weather, which I love, does bring images of thick creamy soups, piping hot chili and stews. This would be a great time of year to share plan friendly recipes :)

I still look at my food 'strays' with disdain, so thank you for reminding me that in the past, they would have completely 'owned' me and driven me back to old habits . . . guess we're all turning into a bunch of bears as -- even though I love fall -- mornings are a bit harder/slower to get out of bed and moving!

Look forward to your progress reports, as they remind me of so many things about myself and encourage me to move forward. I agree -- the ability to limit time off the reservation is critical to real and lasting behavior change. It's something I've been thinking about a lot lately -- hoping on hope what I've accomplished is permanent.

Good for you getting right back on track. IMO making the changes permanent means staying with the journey through inevitable ups and downs. Life will affect us at times, throw us curve balls, and there will also be times to live larger and celebrate. So we will stray at times but always getting back to the path will keep us on course.

@Jmb3450 - Jim, that is really true! It is getting back on track immediately following a special meal or event.

Oh yes soups and comfort food. Soup is a terrific way to get your veggies in and often low in calories. Just gear the homemade soup to your plan. I had homemade potato soup with chopped asparagus added and some homemade whole grain bread with butter for lunch under 350 calories. definitely not low carb though about 45 for the meal. I'll have white bean and veggie soup for lunch tomorrow, probably lower in carbs, I haven't plugged in the ingredients in the cookbook yet.
