Hermiones Mom's Journal, 20 May 2016

So I assumed the hospital stay would drop my weight -- but guess what? -- they filled me so full of fluid trying to get the stupid kidney stone to move, that I GAINED SEVEN POUNDS IN 48 HOURS! Can you imagine? By this afternoon the gain was down to 3 pounds, and I suppose it will keep dropping, but it's kind of amazing given that I barely ate anything, that just all that fluid they were pumping into me added 7 pounds. And this whole situation is going to go on for days most likely. I probably can't get the stone broken up until after Memorial Day, so I'm stuck with this until then. If I feel OK tomorrow morning, I'm going to go ahead and take my skating lesson. I can't sit around and do nothing for two weeks. I really, really want this to be over.

P.S. I forgot to tell this wonderful story. Yesterday a.m., the xray tech came to my room to do another picture of my kidney stone and its pathway to freedom. The room I was in was the size of a postage stamp, and they had a lot of trouble getting the xray machine into the room, and then faced the challenge that they had to take a picture of the part of me on the opposite side of the bed from the machine. The tech came around to that side of the bed with the giant xray plate and I raised myself up on my elbows so he could slide the plate under me, and then he sort of lifted me and repositioned me on the plate. And then he said: Oh I just love thin patients. Thin! He called me thin! No one in my entire life has ever called me thin. It was a big moment for me.

Ma'am, I hope I never have to go through that. I have had enough pain in my life. A kidney stone though? I just don't know about that. And I have been though some pretty gnarly pain.

Yes HCB -- I'm not surprised you missed it because it was a sudden left turn in my usually uneventful life. Around 9pm on Tuesday night, I got this pain and it kept getting worse and worse until by 4am I knew I had to go to the ER. I got there about 6am by cab, and by around 10am, they had diagnosed the kidney stone. They decided to keep me over night because I was such a wreck -- but apparently mostly they kept me because after they dosed me with morphine, my blood pressure dropped to barely-alive-territory, so I think they were scared to send me home. Now I have to get this lithotripsy thing set up to pound it with sound waves. What an adventure!

Thin patients! You must have been on top of the world! By MY standards, you ARE thin. I can't wait to hit that size again. I have a loooooooooong way to go. Big hugs, Tiny. :-)

Every time I have surgery my body poofs out too. I think it's part IV and stress. Glad you're ok.
