Toni Bourlon's Journal, 05 March 2024

So here's what happens:

1 I get on a new plan with a new committment;
2 I lose a few pounds;
3 After a week the weight loss stops;
4 I get aggravated & go on a binge;
5 I gain back the weight & maybe 1 or 2 more lbs;
6 I feel lousy for failing, stop overeating & end up back where I started.

And it's happened again. Still hovering around 158 lbs, and I have another weight loss plan arriving today. Actually, it's an older one that I've done before with some moderate success, the 21-Day Fix. I lost some of the measuring cups so I had to order some more, plus a cookbook AND exercise DVDs. None of this will help if I can't stick with the plan for the full 21 days, though, so that will be the goal this time. And some modest weight loss of course. Crazy that I keep doing this to myself. Interestingly enough, the sermon at Church last Sunday asked us if we were REALLY ready to quit whatever vice we have, and the example used was weight loss. Our Minister talked about a diet counselor friend who talked about the five stages of cheating:

1 The Idea to cheat (usually seeing or thinking about something yummy)
2 The Desire to cheat, which builds from #1
3 The Decision to cheat
4 The Preparation (going out for the ice cream, burger, whatever), and
5 The Actual Cheating

The diet counselor said people could interrupt this train of thought at any stage before #5, and offered suggestions on how to do so. The usual stuff, drink water, go for a walk, call a support buddy, etc. I need to come up with a few, I've had good luck in the past with buying a new outfit I want, LOL! What does anyone else do to distract themselves?

Visualization and affirmations have helped me stick with things.

I have been in your same loop recently, but when I HAVE had success breaking the loop, I distracted myself. Got busy at work on a new project, picked up a good book, did chores around the house, worked in the garden. Anything to get my mind to pass the trigger stage of cheating.

Getting moving and getting your heart rate up is a great distraction. Any type you like - go for a hike, do some yoga, lift weights, shoot hoops, etc.

For me, eating more protein and less sugar helped because then I feel full with less calories.

There are too many available choices for easy AND instant gratification nowadays. Health and wellness is a lifetime journey. Treat your mental fortitude like any other muscle with your physical and nutritional training. Trust in the process. If you are truly putting in the work and holding yourself accountable to the utmost capability, the rewards will come. I highly recommend for all people to watch the podcast on Lewis Howes’ platform with Dr. Mindy Pelz on female hormones and fasting posted 2 months ago. Eye-opening!

Girl! I have been doing that very thing for a long time now! I'm on yet another "new" plan, I'm going to try some of the trigger breakers that you were given. Praying for all of us to succeed 🙏!

I have been on the same roller coaster with the last 15lbs I have been working on. It’s very frustrating to me. I don’t have a great answer, but if I stay busy, I tend to think about food less. You can do it❗️

Yeah you! that you are working with a counselor. Food is my drug of choice and I use it to feel euphoric or depressed. I, too, have a counselor. I am looking for that middle ground, balance. Sounds like you are getting some good input. A puzzle (any type), books, turn on some music and dance in the living room? I am back on my healthy journey again. I am buying dinners that all I have to do is put them in the microwave. Expensive....I don't care. I am worth it. Keep up the good work and keep looking for things to do that make you happy.

I distract myself with lots of unsweetened coffee, tea and warm water. Fasting has been a great way for me to develop discipline and learn to control my cravings. Also, I’ve been focusing on making the best of every day. When I go to bed, after a rough day, I remind myself that tomorrow is a new day and a new opportunity to make better choices! You can do it!!

Just take it day by day; one step at a time, one meal at a time.

I remind myself that whatever it is I'm craving will still be available tomorrow. What I've learned is that success strengthens my resolve;when I stick to plan, weigh my food and get positive results, it's easier for me to stick to plan the next day. But, I have to be absolutely honest about what I eat.

What finally did it for me was a trainer and he developed my macro's and my weight lifting. I did many different diets over the years from Nutrisystem, WW, Slimfast, HMR, Profile and yo-yo dieted. I would get my weight down but then it all came back. I signed my 5th year contract with the trainer and I weigh in at the gym every Friday so he holds me accountable. He is not the type to pat you on the shoulder and say good job. He expects me to put the work in at workouts and in the kitchen. That is what I needed becasue I have been able to maintain for over 3 years. I am a little up right now but I had 3 vacations so I was not as disciplined over the winter but already working my way back down otherwise I will be getting a text from my trainer about it. For me the consistency of the gym is what I need. I work harder in the gym. I know I pay a monthly price for it but in the long run at 60 I am saving on not having any meds that I take and checkups have been great.
