Les Girth's Journal, 11 June 2021

I was riding my bike to pickleball this morning on a bike path that runs down the center of a flood control channel when I came across a squadron of nine javelina (Tayassu tajacu).

Not my favorite. There are many over here in our neck of the woods too. Stay safe.

Javelina look like a type of wild pig, but they are actually members of the peccary family, a group of hoofed mammals originating from South America. I kept my distance and quietly took photos. Normally, these animals will scatter when they encounter humans so I felt fortunate to get such a good pic.

Used to get them foraging in our backyard, back when I lived in Sedona. Smart man to stay safe, they can be quite formidable when they feel threatened.
