So, I think I know where I went wrong with my gym workouts last year.
Not only did I want to lose the fat and the weight but I was also hoping to build muscle...I've changed tactics this year, hoping to get better results.
I'm no longer going on the cross trainer (the treadmill was giving me sore shins) and doing weights, this time, in addition to the dieting, I'm doing 5K on the cross trainer (on the same setting each time) and 5K on the rowing machine.
My plan is to do it in two stages, trim myself back to my goal weight then start building up the muscle.

Now that I've hit the first of three targets I now believe I can actually manage it!!
