Advice on curbing my appetite
Ground-breaking discovery made about how key brain cells control appetite
Called tanycytes, they detect nutrients in food and tell the brain how to react
Amino acids found in certain foods activate them to make us feel fuller quicker
High concentrations found in beef sirloin steak, chicken, avocado and lentils.
When starting a diet, it is hard to know what to eat to ward off hunger pangs.

Now scientists have revealed the foods which fill us up best, by sending signals to the brain that we have had enough to eat.

Chicken, mackerel, pork shoulder and beef stirloin steak are among the most filling foods, according to researchers at the University of Warwick.
Plums, apricots, avocados, lentils and almonds have the same hunger-busting effect.
People no longer feel hungry after eating these foods because of the amino acids they contain.
These amino acids, arginine and lysine, have been found to activate newly discovered brain cells called tanycytes which control the appetite.
Nicholas Dale, professor of neuroscience at the University of Warwick, said: ‘Amino acid levels in blood and brain following a meal are a very important signal that imparts the sensation of feeling full.

‘Finding that tanycytes, located at the centre of the brain region that controls body weight, directly sense amino acids has very significant implications for coming up with new ways to help people to control their body weight within healthy bounds.’

The brain's role when dieting

Amino acids, found in protein-rich animal products, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds, are already known to be the best nutrients for satisfying hunger and keeping us full for longer.
This is because protein is digested more slowly and does not cause the rise in blood sugar which makes us crave more food soon after finishing a meal.
However it is becoming increasingly apparent that the brain is also important in dieting. Amino acids’ effect on the brain would stop people feeling hungry even without any effect on the digestive system.

The key brain cells involved in curbing hunger pangs are revealed in the study led by the University of Warwick and published in the journal Molecular Metabolism.

These brain cells, called tanycytes, rapidly detected the two amino acids found in foods including avocados, almonds and chicken.

The amino acids, arginine and lysine, were quickly detected by brain cells made fluorescent to show their effect.

Within 30 seconds the cells reacted to the amino acids, sending chemical signals which would travel to the part of the brain controlling appetite and body weight.
The scientists discovered two amino acids – arginine and lysine – that react most with tanycytes, the brain cells that control our hunger.

The following foods are high in these acids and are therefore make you feel full:
Chicken
Turkey meat
Pork shoulder
Cheese, especially parmesan
Anchovies
Tuna
Mackerel
Crabs
Almonds
Walnuts
Pistachios
Peanuts
Sesame seeds
Tahini

gout and the aktins and keto diet
I have had gout since I was 45. AMA said here is a diet plan it was called the AMA diet. YOU HAVE SEEN IT. THE BIG FOOD PYRAMID. All carbs little protein and very, very little fat. well that DIET made my gout worst! suffered for years. then read Atkins book and things start to make sense why the AMA did not know what they were talking about. I email dr. Atkins and he said the first month will probably be tough because of water lost and that I should stay well hydrated. he told me that my blood sugars were always high because of the high carb diet. this was in the late 80's when THE AMA SAID O BUTTER IS TERRIBLE EAT MORE MARGARINE ITS GOOD FOR YOU! and DR. Atkins is a nut! well I believed the nut and low and behold the only time I had a gout attack is when I got lazy and went off Atkins. at this time I was going to therapy at the hospital for my back 5 time a week and the therapist was telling me how bad Atkins is. I challenged him to read Atkins book and then talk to me about how bad the diet is. well he was transferred to another hosp. for fill in's for 2 months so I did not see him. then one day he was back and he lost weight and I pointed this out and he said that he was going to Hawaii and he wanted to loose weight for the beach and yes it was on the Atkins diet. He read the book. the medical schools are still teaching old school out dated info.in the last 30 years the ONLY time I get gout is when I get lazy and eat high carbs. maybe 10 times in that 30 years. so if you have gout here is my experience take it for what you think. to this day my doctors are telling me this is bad for your arteries and when my tests come back my cholesterol is 152.

Can I add more meals to the day?
Deedles thanks for the info. wow 8 years and no upgrade. this is a big deal in all low carb diets. I do not think that it would be a big deal to add a dietary cell on the spread sheet cell. will look at my fitness pal.
