Weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint. And I'm ready to finally cross the finish line. This is a story of my weight history, my first 80-ish lbs down, and a re-commitment to getting to goal.

I've been overweight pretty much my entire life, even as a very young child. I can't help but have one of those "if I had known then..." moments every now and then. Especially when I'm out at the grocery store and see these other parents enabling their chubby children the same way mine did me.

I've always struggled with weight and thought to myself that I just didn't have what it takes to lose it. It was mid-September 2007 that I started to make a concentrated effort to lose weight. I can't even tell you what my highest weight was exactly, I didn't own a scale (and was too afraid to even step on one.) The first time I sucked it up and weighed myself on the scale at the gym (after about a month of diet/workout), it was 267, so if I had to guess I would put myself somewhere around 275-280.

The working out was an adjustment, I had "worked out" before, but never REALLY worked out. The first night we went to the track I couldn't even make it half way around without stopping. Soon I was running a whole mile (granted a 17 minute mile... but still a mile) and today I can run a 10k in about 70 minutes and hope to complete a half marathon next year.

The eating was hard too. But when we went out to eat, I would order my normal food and Patrick would just eat half of it. (Hes a 6'3, 215lb guy with the appetite of someone twice his size)

From September to early March I had gotten down to about 225, and had to have the bridesmaid dress for the wedding I was standing in later that month taken in, I put it on at my fitting and it fell right down! In terms of pants, I had gone from a size 22, to anywhere between a 14 and a 16.

Soon after that I stopped losing weight, and started gaining some back. At first it was "oh its just a little" here and there. Then I didn't even step on the scale for fear of what it would say. I knew I needed to get back on track, but somehow I just couldn't find my motivation.

It was March 2009 heard a commercial for the medical weight loss clinic on the radio one morning. I always heard those commercials "lose all the weight you want for just $1 a pound" I always wondered what it was about, so I decided to just go for it and gave them a call. When I went in for my consultation I was ashamed to see that I was back up to 262.

I started on the medical weight loss program (which by the way costs MUCH more than $1 per pound. $200 sign up fee PLUS my $1 per pound for what I wanted to lose up front plus you had to buy their special food supplements) I will give them credit though, if you follow their program to the T, you will lose about 3 pounds a week. However, it was very restrictive. A LOT of protein (I'm talking eggs for breakfast, 8oz of non-processed lean meat for lunch AND dinner, plus 3 of these protein supplements daily) very little carbs (like 2 servings a day, and limited to 1/4 cup of bran flakes or 1 rice cake) fruits and veggies (but no bananas, potatoes, or other high sugar/starch). I dropped about 35 lbs in just under 3 months, but it got really hard to keep up with... I love to EAT!

I stopped following their plan, stopped checking in for 3-times weekly weigh ins, etc. I just didn't have the time or the discipline. From there I decided to give weight watchers a try in July 2009. I opted to do the program online because I really don't have time to sit through a meeting. Its a lot slower going on weight watchers, and because the plan gives you so much freedom to eat "what ever you want" as long as you account for it in points, I slip up a lot more often. But I'm not constantly miserable because all I ate was a big glob of bland turkey. I'm a real numbers person so I love making it into a game to see how I can "makeover" my favorite foods into lower points values to fit them in.

By late fall of '09 I was down to about 205. By then I was feeling comfortable and I kept over eating between holidays and family parties, etc. etc. I never went back over 205, but I was having trouble getting under the 200 mark.

In February 2010, we decided to kick it up a notch. Even though Patrick is not a big guy or overweight in any sense in my eyes, he was feeling uncomfortable because he had always been very athletic in the past. We joined lifetime fitness and decided to sign up for a 12 week personal training package. Working with Bobby (my trainer) I was able to get as low as 195, but I was constantly bouncing back and forth between about 196-201. Even though I was working out heavily, I still just love food, and I continued to eat like a 300lb man. I worked with Bobby for an hour 3 days a week for about 4 months. Then I dropped down to 1 day a week for 2 more months, due to financial and time constraints.

In August I got an online coupon for a 30day unlimited bootcamp class for $30. I got up at 5am every day during September 2010, and I went to this class. I can't even imagine how much weight I could have dropped had i stayed on top of my eating. the week before I started the class I had topped back over to 201. I did the 4 week class 5 days a week, and was planning to sign up for an additional 6 month package that they had. During the last week of class some life decisions were made, and Patrick and I decided to move to an apartment. The place we chose was too far away for me to continue the boot camp classes. I would have to get up at 4:30 in order to make it on time, and then have a 40 minute drive back home to get ready for work, and a 20 minute drive to work. Considering I don't get home til about 10pm some nights, that just wasn't feasible.

I DID however manage to get down to 189.6 :) Now its been almost 2 weeks in my new place, and I'm trying to get settled down and adjusted. It was hard last week, and I got back up to 192, but today I was at 190.4 Once I get through midterms, I hope to start working out in our apartment complexes fitness center every morning before work. We also canceled our membership at Lifetime fitness (distance) and are planning on joining the Southgate YMCA, as residents of the city get a discount.

According to the BMI calculator a good weight for my height is anywhere from 132-164, with the IDEAL weight at around 141. Because of the weight training I've done both with Bobby and in my boot camp class, I know the importance of building a good muscle tone to develop my metabolism and keep it strong. I know muscle weighs more than fat, and I can't see my body ever getting below 140. 50 lbs to go... can I do it in time for swim suit season 2011?
