Hi, I just found Fatsecret and will be joining a few groups that apply to me. I've been following a Paleo/Primal diet (which is grain/legume/processed foods free and can be low carb if you want) for about a year, but just haven't been loosing any weight. I'm sure it's because I lead a sedentary life and I've been overweight for so many years. It's going to take some major effort to loose a sufficient amount of fat - not this half-hearted stuff I usually do.
This Fall some personal disappointments led to setbacks and I fell off the wagon into a heavy carb binge and gained about 20 lbs. On Jan 13 I decided to really put my nose to the grindstone and go VERY low carb & INCREASE fat; I'm aiming for 80% fat and higher of 1000-1200 calories/day. I've just read Dana Carpender's book "FAT FAST" (with sections by Jimmy Moore) which is full of ideas, recipes and advice. I am still working on a meal plan that works for me. In the last week I've lost about 5 pounds (which is to be expected). It IS possible to do this long term.
I find that joining groups and challenges help me to stick to my plan and my goals even though nobody would know whether I was cheating or not. It's all in my head.

Sweeteners...
(I started writing this before I saw your recent comment about just using sweetener in ice tea, but I'm going to post this anyway. My apologies for how longwinded this is, I just want everyone to succeed!)
OK, this is going to sound like preaching, but I'm gonna say it anyway. I think it would be better to 1) eliminate your overall consumption of things that are sweet, and 2) NOT eat artificial sweeteners in place of sugar AT ALL. When a sweetener is needed in cooking or baking, use something REAL (not created in a lab, regardless of what the packaging says), such as maple syrup, locally sourced honey and even organic sugar. Organic sugar still has calories but is minimally processed and comes from sugarcane that you could eat raw if you wanted!
I am 55 and have always been very weak-willed. I tend to give in to cravings easily. But last year I came to realize that sugar (and bread) had such a deathgrip on my life that I just had to get rid of it once and for all.
I suggest you give yourself an ultimatum: Say to yourself "In 30 days I am going to be sugar free". Then either go cold turkey, or take about 5 days to cut back on ALL sugar and sugar substitutes and then continue the remaining 25 days without. I did it cold turkey for 30 days last October, and it worked for me. Even though I used to drink 2 quarts of water with CrystalLite, I now prefer my water plain (I suspect sugar substitutes retard weightloss - and there is some scientific evidence that backs that up, but I wont go into that here), and my cravings for sugar diminished drastically (but they aren't completely gone, I'm human). And because I was successful in that 30 day sugar/sugarsubstitute elimination period, I proved to myself that I am STRONGER willed than I thought I was and that I can live without sugar, processed foods with sugar and sugar substitutes. (I also don't eat bread, pasta or other starchy carbs anymore [they all break down to glucose in the body], but that's another subject for another day.)
Gnat824 is right about conditioning - if you continue to provide your your taste buds with sweet stuff (regardless of the calorie count), you will keep craving it.
If you HAVE to have sweetener in ice tea (I know, it's harsh without some sweetener), try honey or organic sugar. Sugar has 15 calories in 1 TEASPOON, honey has about 20. Add just the minimum amount to make it pleasant, then for the next glass, add a little bit less.
You can do it.
