I'm still learning to make better choices. At the meeting today I avoided the doughnut holes and the bottled juice, wanting to save those calories for later. Even though the snack boxes they gave us were full, I stopped eating as soon as I felt satisfied and brought the rest of the snacks home to my sons. It's very empowering to "just say no." I also caluculated my calorie count (for estimated meals today) first thing this morning, knowing we would have pizza tonight. It helped me to see what I could "legally" eat by the end of the day - i.e., only TWO pieces of pizza. Nice to know my limits instead of wondering how I'm doing... Honestly, it's clear to see why I was gaining weight even though I consider myself a healthy eater. I can clearly see from my daily menus that I love carbs and need to limit those portions.

I thought I had so many extra calories to "waste" at supper time yesterday, but I was amazed at how quickly those disappeared. There were snacks at a church function, which I was able to resist for the most part - but I ended up having a half glass of lemonade. I stayed within my calorie limit for the day but there was none of the "wiggle room" that I had expected after having done so well for breakfast and lunch.

Wow! What a difference yesterday made. I purposely measured out all my portions today to see EXACTLY what I'm eating. It was a real confidence booster knowing that I can control my portions. I avoided snacking between meals and carefully planned my lunch and breakfast. What a surprise to see I still have 1,000 calories to use for dinner. (I don't plan to use all of them, but being careful means I can splurge for dinner when I want to.) That's great! I'm so happy to no longer be blindly worrying about why/how I'm gaining weight.

I consider myself a light eater, but I continue to gain weight as I grow older (and as I've recently moved to the U.S. where junk food is more readily available.) I decided to track what I actually eat to see where the calories are coming from. I was amazed that even before dinner today I had used up 80 percent of my daily allowance. Seeing what I actually eat helps me to see pitfalls in my diet. I really didn't need that banana muffin this morning. Maybe the piece of candy I ate could be a reward on the days I exercise in stead of just a random snack. I'm still trying to figure it out...
