Introductory Post: Hi everyone! I am new here. 52 year-old lady, 160lbs, 5' 5.5" living in NW IL, with some arthritis (hands/wrists, feet/ankles, and my right knee) TMJ and moderate carpal tunnel. I decided to try harder because I think my ankles/feet will feel better if I carry less weight. Also, have been feeling fatigued and hoping to rev up my metabolism and feel stronger & more energetic.

I have a husband who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 4 years ago, and while we were not fast food people to begin with, we have changed to a healthier diet over the years. We try to include more whole grains in our diet, eat fish for dinner once a week and have a salad night once a week. We try to watch our portions as we were taught in diabetic nutrition classes taught at the hospital. We mostly cook from scratch unless we are stuck away from home.

I find the problem of having a diabetic spouse is that if people bring sweets, it becomes my responsibility to eat them or throw them away. For instance, my husband's employer gave him a 2 lb box of Premium Chocolates for Thanksgiving, :/ I am still trying to get rid of it. Currently a little less than a half pound left to eat. They should be gone by Monday at least. We had far too much desserts for Thanksgiving, home-made goodies that I didn't want to throw out. I also have to watch the leftover carbs that I "save" my husband from eating if I have cooked too much. We must work harder to keep the bad foods from entering our house. Going to someone elses place for Christmas Eve :)

We bought a hobby farm in the country 16 months ago. I weighed 170 lbs then. We moved from an apartment complex in August 2011, where it was difficult to get much exercise. After the first year, just by working on the lawn, creating vegetable and herb gardens, shoveling snow and such, I lost 20 lbs without really trying. Down to 150, maybe even 148. I was hoping that the weight loss would just continue 'til I reached a healthy weight. Sadly, I think my body has adjusted to the increased activity, and my weight has crept up, and clothes getting too small :(

Exercise: My main exercise program is going to be Zumba as seen on TV. It is an aerobic dance with weights. I chose this because my arthritis keeps me from doing floor exercise such as pushups, or getting up and down alot, as I have seen in the P90X. I really just need fat burning and pain relief, more energy would be a plus. I haven't received it yet, but should be here in the next week. I have set up a Standing Monday Night Date with a close neighbor lady where we will learn the Zumba and have a Healthy Dinner afterward. My husband has committed to do Zumba with me on Saturday and Sundays. I am on my own for the rest of the week, unless I can find another friend who wants to join in. My goal is to do Zumba one hour per day, 6 or 7 days per week. This is in addition to my normal farmwork and housework.

Diet: I am formulating my diet based off of an old body type diet that I found in a magazine back in the early 1990's. It has worked for me before. My shape was determined tend toward the apple shape. Belly fat. It included whole grain, skim milk, fresh fruit at every meal. One cup of steamed/cooked veg per day, and unlimited amount of fresh veg per day. 2-3 oz protein at lunch, and 4-6 oz protein at dinner. It also recommended snacks of fresh fruit or dark chocolate. My type in particular was to stay away from creamy foods and spicy foods* as those appear to be my type major downfalls. :(

Instead of having three meals with snacks between I am going to shoot for 6 small somewhat equal meals per day.

1. protein/egg breakfast

2. oatmeal - 1/2 cup with fruit (fresh if possible, apple, orange, grapes, etc.)

3. half a sandwich on whole grain bread, glass of skim milk

4. salad (with vinaigrette, no sugar, no croutons) or soup (meat/pea and vegetable kind, not creamy or too spicy*)

5. protein, veg, carb dinner. Plate size 8" -- 1/2 plate cooked veg, 1/4 plate carb, 1/4 plate protein.

6. a 1/2 c bowl of whole grain cereal, oatmeal or other, with skim milk.

Snack? I guess walnuts, plain popcorn, grapefruit sections, or dark chocolate. Suggestions?

Major beverages include Joint Juice, water, unsweetened teas, black coffee, wine or beer.

Meds or supplements: I am currently taking 1 Centrum multivitamin, 1 Mega Red krill oil capsule, and 2 Aleve in the morning, and 2 Aleve 12 hours later, in the evening. (the Joint Juice above, in beverages, is really a glucosamine supplement for my arthritis also)

I am also using 4mg generic nicotine lozenges, since I made a deal to quit smoking in order to get my cattle, long story, but the lozenges work real well for me.

Another goal is to include some garlic every day and to have one glass of red wine every day. My preference is beer, but I think red wine is deemed healthier.

* My theory about why my type is to stay away from spicy things is that they commonly come served over processed carbs. Not sure if that's why the diet wanted my type to stay away from spicy food, or for some other reason. Anyway, I kind of feel that I can eat spicy food if it is without potatoes, rice, or noodles, so I will every now and again, and not feel bad about it. :)

My full plan won't be in effect until the Zumba arrives, and the box of chocolate is gone. I'll still weigh in regardless so we can see what this holiday season does to me :) I probably won't kick into high gear until the holidays have passed, naturally. The goal is to reach target weight of 130 by mid-may to early june.

What a long introductory post! Hopefully, I gave a good picture of the situation and my plan. Nice to meet you all :)

Comments, suggestions, and questions welcome.
