Anosmia & Eating Slowly
Da-Jones, I too am anosmic & trying to lose weight. Were you born with anosmia? I lost my sense of smell 1.5 yrs. ago, so unlike those who suffer from congenital anosmia I have memories of what different foods taste like. However, cravings (that of course can never be fulfilled) are now slowly beginning to fade. I never had weight issues before and always enjoyed eating quite healthy. Since I can no longer taste very many things, I've been on a quest & therefore making poor nutrition choices along the way. I've now decided that it's time to stop using the anosmia as an excuse & begin a weight loss regimen to lose the 25 lbs I gained in the last year. I have chosen the Atkins diet, and so far it is fine (I don't really miss what I can't really taste anyway!).
One way that you might be able to help slow down your eating and control your portions is to look at it as more of a task than a blissful treat. Like you said, you can't 'savor each bite,' so perhaps you could measure out healthy portions of healthy foods, prepare everything as if you would tools for assembling something, and then eat only what you have on your plate. Then while you are eating, actually count the number of times you chew. I also make sure to take many drinks of water in between bites of food. I am by no means a nutritionist, so I have no idea if that's recommended, healthy, etc. That's just something that has been working for me. Oh! I also read a trick once that I thought was simple but brilliant....eat off of a smaller plate, that way the portions look bigger. It works for me since my main block is a psychological one.
I'm sorry that you have both anosmia and are struggling with your weight. I think it's a unique combination, and thus far I'm not quite able to relate to smellers on other weight loss forums. I wish you the best of luck!
