losing 0.1 lb a week
31 October 2011
After being sick for months on end and dieting quite a bit earlier in the year and pretty much at a standstill with weight loss I decided to quit dieting. At the end of May, after thinking I was dying for several months, I went to the doctor. I found out I was seriously Hypothyroidism. My TSH was 86.5 (Normal is 0.31-4.0). Since June, I have been adjusting my dose of Synthroid to try to get myself within a normal range on the TSH. They told me since I was so Hypo, we had to go slow on increasing my dosage because jump starting my metabolism could cause a heart attack. I started on 50 mcg x 1 week, then 75 mcg x 2 weeks, then 100 mcg x 4 weeks. My TSH at the end of this time was 11.68. My Synthroid was increased to 125 mcg x 1 month, then my TSH was 6.8 and I was increased to 150 mcg x 4 weeks. In the mean time I was having quite a bit of neck pain...often changing sides and just being quite uncomfortable, so I talked to my Endocrinologist about it and she said to ease my mind, she would Ultrasound my Thyroid (because it was not enlarged) well within a few minutes I was scared to death because she found nodules on it and numerous enlarged Lymph Nodes in the area. The Nodules had grown into the Thyroid, thus they could not be felt. I went for a more extensive U/S and thankfully some of the Lymph Nodes outside the area of my Thyroid had went back down, but those around the Thyroid were still enlarged. I was diagnosed with Severe Hashimoto's Thyroiditis with Lymphadopathy. My endocrinologist set me up with a Surgeon to discuss the removal of my Thyroid and the potential risks vs waiting around to get Cancer and going through U/S and potential Fine Needle Biopsies every 6 months and I opted to have it removed for my own piece of mind and to not have to worry about getting Thyroid Cancer, if I didn't already have it. I still do not know the results of my Biopsy after the Thyroid removal last Tuesday. Maybe I will find that out tomorrow. It has been HELL with all the waiting, very stressful. I am glad it is out of there and I am feeling much better. I have been eating like a PIG for months on end and actually lost 7 lbs through all of this (it helps when your metabolism starts functioning again via medication). I had a couple of Lymph Nodes removed along with the Thyroid and a Parathyroid transplanted into the muscle in my neck, 2 others intact and one lost in all the fibrotic tissue that engulfed it. I am still waiting for my complete diagnosis after the pathological examination on my thyroid and the lymph nodes, but at least part of the weight on my chest has been lifted. I don't know if I will be back on a diet when all of this is over with, I may be worrying about other things because I am at risk for numerous Autoimmune Diseases, but maybe I will luck out!!

I was surprised I lost more weight, but I tend to not eat as much as I used to and do not "stuff" myself when given the opportunity at Buffets.
