18 August 2014

I purchased a scale that arrived on Saturday, August 9th. Before I used it, I estimated my weight at 145. I was off by 6-1/2 pounds. So my start weight for logging is 151.2. One week later, I weigh 146.6. The scale also measures body fat, muscle mass, and something else, but I didn't write those down. I think my body fat is at 38.2%

My goal was to lose 1-2 pounds per week, so that is a little more than I'd planned. It could be that my base weight simply fluctuates throughout the month and last Monday was on the upswing, while today is on the down. I guess I'll have a better idea next Monday.

Considering that I haven't implemented an exercise routine yet, I'm happy that diet alone has produced good results. I'm mostly satisfied when I give myself enough snacks and I have learned that I love celery with peanut butter! I'm still not getting enough fiber, so I purchased some flax meal on Saturday. I plan on putting it in my yogurt, but keep forgetting to do that. I need to sit it out on the counter where I will see it. Can you believe that flax meal and water can be substituted for an egg in most recipes? Another surprise is liking yogurt, at least the carbmaster kind. I'm not sure if I will like regular yogurt, and I don't plan to try another type in the near future, but it definitely works as a dessert for me.

I estimate that on some days pre-diet, I had 500-1,000 more calories than I needed. And they definitely weren't valuable calories -- mostly processed carbs. I always started my day with a large bowl of Lucky Charms with skim milk. Then I would eat half a box of reduced-fat wheat thins and an entire package of caramel-flavored rice cakes instead of a good lunch. Recently I had been eating Cafe Rio chips with guacamole as dinner and would often have a whole bag of homestyle popcorn after dinner. On those days, I probably doubled my necessary calories.

It's amazing that difference just paying attention makes. Pre-diet, I might occasionally have half of a banana, but no fruit to speak of. The only vegetables were occasional cucumbers or salad with fat-free dressing. Now I make a pico de gallo I call picada bandera ("minced flag") that I eat with baked tortilla chips. I still don't eat much fruit because of the sugar, and hope that what I get from yogurt will suffice. However, I don't think I'm getting enough potassium, so I should probably include a banana every day.

I am on a quest to find the right combination of meals in a single day that will satisfy all of my diet requirements and goals. Right now, I'm hoping that a weekly average of all the requirements and goals will balance.
