I am starting on my journey. I know this is not going to be easy but something I need to do for myself and for my own wellbeing.

I am 56 years old and have never dieted in my life. Never watched what I ate. Never went out of my way to exercise. Two years ago (October 2012) I quit smoking (after 40 years!), I went on a new medication and hit full blown menopause. This deadly triad of events was the background for me gaining nearly 70 pounds in those two years! In 2006 I weighed 145 and, two weeks ago, at my rheumatologist office, I weighed in at 214! Seeing that number on that scale was what I needed to actually do something about my weight.

I hate that I have to unbutton my jeans to tie my tennis shoes (sitting down, of course!). I hate that I have to sit down to put my pants on. I hate that none of my favorite clothes no longer fit any longer. I hate looking in the mirror!

Background, mother was morbidly obese and it caused her death at age 50, I was only 20. She weighed over 350 at her heaviest. She had the by-pass surgery, but ended up have that reserved when she developed gall bladder issues. She then did the stomach stapling, which was wonderful! But then the staples pulled out and they went in to do it again, about 4 years later. She died on the table. Her heart gave out from the years of carrying all that weight and all the surgeries, diet pills and fad diets. I told myself that I would never, ever, get to that point.

Both my brothers are very heavy and both have developed health problems as a result. I want to stop my route down that same path!

Right now, I am doing low carb. For the last week, I have been staying under 100g carbs. The nights my hubby is teaching (3 nights a week) I am under 50g those days. Started walking everyday, at least a mile, hoping to increase that with the treadmill we got second hand.

I also suffer from rheumatoid arthritis so I am limited with some of the exercises I can do. My new RA medication and the quitting smoking I think are the biggest factors in my weight gain.

I am positive that I can do this and that I can stick with this. If I can quit smoking cold turkey after 40 years, I ought to be able to lose this weight!
