Two years ago I lost my older brother in a very tragic instance of unexpected cardiac arrest. He had, had a few health problems over the years but we never expected something like this to happen. He was my best friend and the trauma of losing him has taken a great toll on my health and wellbeing. I'm 23 now and in the last two years I have put on 60 pounds. I'm 6 feet tall and gain weight quite evenly so I didn't really notice it at first but in the last few months my clothes stopped fitting and my stomach bulged constantly. I've come to the conclusion I need to take action, and fast. My BMI is borderline obese, which is as unhealthy as proper obese from a cardiovascular perspective.

My whole family, brother included, have always been thin, lithe, blond Northern Europeans. While I was thin for most of my younger years I yoyo'd quite a bit in my teens and have always had the swarthy gypsy look. I've come to the conclusion I have quite a different genetic makeup than the rest of my family.

While grief and depression have definitely taken a toll on my body I have come to understand my metabolism and hormones are pretty out of whack too. I eat organic a lot and then I get pizza and chips from the corner store and stuff my face. I don't exercise as consistently as I need and often crave and spend a lot of time in a stationary position.

Plan:

Hormone management:
This week I'm going off birth control. My boyfriend has agreed to this an we're going to play it safe with condoms.
I'm tackling my pretty severe hayfever and dust allergies with natural remedies and frequent cleaning to lessen the hormonal interference of prescription allergy medication I'm usually on.
I'm going to tackling my hormonal imbalances with diet and finally get that prescription for my hypothyroidism.

Activity:
Train for half marathon in August (is March now)
Do yoga A LOT... So much that I'm ready to do my long postponed yoga teacher training over the summer.

Grief and Depression:
Join a support group for people who have lost loved ones.
Exercise or meditate when I'm sad, not eat.

Diet:
Eat clean, organic, unprocessed, grass fed, thisthat. Less coffee, more green tea. Less sugary alcohol. No wheat ( I have an intolerance I ignore).
Fast and cleanse minimally but occasionally.

Journal entry numero uno complete.
