TBH, I haven't given much thought to what I'm eating lately. I spent 5 weeks at my parents' in South Korea in mid summer. I left the apartment in the morning and went exploring, came back between 7pm and 11 pm, so I normally had a big breakfast and bigger dinner, and just a small snack for lunch because it was too hot. Hunger caught up with me on the subway on my way back. Because there's climate control on the subway.
Then my friend in Kharkiv died of a cardiac event. I don't know if he just worked himself into an early grave repairing damages from my country's shellings, or if another airraid alarm proved one too many for his heart. He was only 44. His name is Mikhailo Kabanov. He was a volunteer for Culture Shock and an administrator of the Stena (Wall) club. He was a true hero and patriot. I'm so proud to have been his friend and so ashamed of my country waging this criminal unjustifiable war against his motherland, his family, his work, his life. He left a widow named Yulia and a little son Yogor Kabanov.
Of course I started overeating and fasting intemittently after learning of Misha's death. We actually met online. A friend told me about a musical record that was never officially release and that featured an artist that was on top of St Petersburg club charts at the time. I found an ad for it, called the phone number, a man picked up. I explained what I wanted and how I knew about the record. And it turned out, he knew who I was. 'You're Xena, I know who you are! Sova told me so much about you! Forget about paying, I'll have Sova bring the CD to St Petersburg next time he's on tour!' A few months later Misha came to St Petersburg himself, along with Okrestr Che.
Now they're all volunteering in the rear supporting the Ukrainian defenders. In their radio appearances they never mention any ties with Russia. It's tabboo now, thanks to Putin very little. They stopped speaking Russian. I learned some Ukrainian. And now one of them is dead. Cardiac arrest or something. I eat and starve in jolts and jerks. I forget to monitor my weight. Day 577 of the war still feels like day 1.
Then I had food poisoning. It took me about 6 days to recover. And I think the combination of losing a very dear friend and what felt like a week's worth of meals brought my weight down. I definitely do not recomment this method for weight control.

Day 130 of the war. I've lost a bit of weight since day 115. I watched some videos of my friends performing live for Day of Music in Kharkiv. They look good. My friend's sound recording studio reopened. I supposed that's good news. I still wish they didn't have to perform sitting on the rim of a shell crater, next to a burned car body. I wish my friend's studio could again offer its services to musicians from all over Europe and it wouldn't mean they would risk getting bombed. But what does it matter, what I wish. They look like they put on a bit of weight. I hope it means they are at least well fed. Although it could just mean they only have pasta. How much produce will there be come fall? How many crops will there be considering their fields are bombed and mined by the Russians?
I've been having cravings for Ukrainian cuisine. My friends are the best cooks. When one of them stayed with me for a few months, I gained a kilo for each of those months. The man knows a billion recipes for potatoes. I had to zip up my pants lying down. Totally worth it. I hope he is safe. His city is being systematically destroyed. His brother lives in Russia, and recently there's been news of his brother's city being hit as well, but I don't know if it's from Ukraine or by some stray Russian missiled. Everyone is pointing fingers and firing rockets at everyone else. But however they spin it, it was Putin's choice. I believe that ultimately he is responsible. Not my friend, not his brother, not me.
Gosh, I can almost taste those potatoes in my mind. Thankfully, I never learned to cook. If I had, I wouldn't be able to stick to 10/14 intermittent eating.
