Diet followed "poorly"? Oh my goodness. We had someone over last night for a birthday celebration, and we had a drink before dinner, steaks, baked potatoes, and ice cream and cake for dessert. I made an estimate of the amount of calories for the whole thing, and came up with something like 2,000 kcal for a *single meal*. And I ate only a half a steak and a relatively small potato! Okay, I did eat the ice cream, when I could have declined...

Aside--my diet philosophy does not include declining ice cream. What kind of person declines the occasional ice cream? Instead I try not to have it around very often.

I'm not sure what my point is here. For social reasons, we had to prepare the meal that we did. I certainly don't eat like that normally; I might eat steak twice a year. I don't care so much for the Thanksgiving feast as prepared by my family either, because if I sample most of the side dishes then I end up eating another 2,000 kcal meal. If a special occasion meal were up to me, it would be a reasonable main dish, two healthy vegetable sides, and a small judiciously-chosen dessert.

I suppose that I'll just have to compensate for such binges dictated by others' expectations, until we in the USA end our culture of ritual overeating.
