horridzombie's Journal, 08 July 2023

So here I am again. I look back at all my progress last year, and I feel a little bit sad. However, it was because of all my hard work that the impossible became possible. I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in April after many years of being told by doctors that it was extremely unlikely because of my PCOS. The only reason I even started to suspect I might be pregnant was because I was suddenly ravenous all the time, and my self-control, I had developed, completely disappeared.

Although I tried to continue to eat healthy and in moderation, by the time the holidays came around, I went back to my old ways. My appetite was insane and I gained so much. Since giving birth, I've been home with little sleep, no physical activity, and no energy to cook, so we've been ordering out. I've heard that breastfeeding is supposed to help you lose weight, but with my increased appetite, that hasn't been the case for me.

I go back to work from maternity leave July 17, and I want to start to try to make my way back. However, I am not willing to jeopardize my milk supply, which makes things tricky. If I cut my calories too much, it will have a negative impact on how much I can produce. I suspect my progress will be much slower and take longer, at least while I am breastfeeding. I really want to for at least 6 months to a year. I have an appointment to speak with a nutritionist next week, which will hopefully help me figure out the number of calories needed to successfully lose weight while maintaining milk supply.

If any Moms, who have breastfeed and lost weight have any advice for me, I would love it 💕

I was fortunate that my first baby wanted to nurse frequently, & I ended up being thinner than I was in high school. Friends asked what my secret was. So, I would say let your bsby eat as much as he wants to! 😃 But honestly I also had PCOS & have thyroid disease, making losing weight really hard. I really tend to crave carbs. So I would suggest eating lots mainly protein and veggies, avoiding carbs and dugars (even natural sugars). (I know many with PCOS are given Metformin to control blood sugars.) https://www.aafp.org/pubs/afp/issues/2003/1201/p2265a.html#:~:text=Metformin%20also%20is%20effective%20in,was%20achieved%20with%20metformin%20therapy.

Congratulations on the birth of your son! I remember you from before and am glad you are back. You made great progress before and it will happen again when the time is right. I didn't lose weight right away when my daughter was born (can't say that I tried, TBH) but eventually we did a lot of mommy and me type activities, and once she was in nursery school I was able to fit in some exercise. Hopefully others will have some suggestions for you in the short term. Wishing you and your family all the best!

Congratulations! I lost weight while nursing my second. I tracked everything I ate. Stuck to around 2000 calories. Lots of protein. Oats, water and electrolytes if you need to boost your milk supply.
