horridzombie's Journal, 01 October 2021

September 16, I turned 31 and decided to change my relationship with food and exercise.

I grew up poor, so not a lot of junk food or going out to eat, so I was thin until I turned 15 and got my first job and money. I looove food, love love love it. So I gained a fair amount and I was chubby, but I honestly wasn't bothered by the weight. Then I got married to the love of my life, who is also a foodie. And I gained. I started smoking at a young age, I smoked 10 years but in 2015 I decided to quit. I succeeded but I gained a MASSIVE amount.

I've made attempts in the past to lose weight but I never made it far. So I just gave up on myself and fell into a deep hole of depression.
I've been in a dark place where I didn't care about my health at all, I wanted to die. But I have to many reasons to live for and now I've made it my goal to love myself, to drag myself up from that pit of self loathing.

I have no idea what I am doing. To be honest I don't really believe I'll be able to lose the weight. I try to tell myself to think positive but I can't even fathom it. Despite that I am attempting to eat healthier, in smaller portions as well as intermittent fasting.

Exercise is difficult for me, I hate working out. While I enjoy physical exercise in the form of swimming, hiking, walking, and hell even jogging outdoors. I hate working out because there isn't anything to focus on but how uncomfortable, hot, and painful I feel. I am still working on my severe social anxiety and so far I can't even bear the thought of joining a gym or running in public. I've been researching workouts that I can do at home instead. I bought a spin bike for my birthday and I've been working out at least 30 minutes every day.

I figure if I really put an effort into regular exercise and eat healthy and make smart choices that will be enough for me. I'm not certain I'll lose weight at all but I can try to be healthy and so that is my ultimate goal.

I would love any advice at all.

Hi there👋🏽, will share what I do, and you can see if any of that works for you:- 1. We lose weight by focusing on a calorie deficit, no matter the way of eating you choose, so log those calories, you'll have to make certain to measure everything and be precise. Each day be sure to come in at or under your recommended daily calories. 2. Exercise for me is not so much about weight loss but more about staying fit and having a healthy mind. Instead of a "work out" how about scheduling three day of fun activity- a hike, a swim and a jog each week. Each week push yourself a bit more, and track your progress you'll be amazed how much better you'll get week to week. You've got this, cheering you on 🎉

One more thing, check out my post on 17th September, many of the FS Family kindly dropped me a comment sharing the one thing that got them to goal weight or 75% there. You've got this 💪🏾🥗.

I was 283lbs when I was admitted 5150 & diagnosed bipolar. A year later I weigh 209lbs. And that's while being on lithium! I am a shut in, agoraphobic, so only exercise I get is household chores. I lost the weight by counting calories. And you have to be precise. That way if you are not losing you can lower your calories. Impossible to do if you are not precise. Weighing & measuring is a pain but if you are serious about losing it's a must. But hey if a crazy fool like me can do you can too. 😊

Oh and don't lower calories too much too fast. Lowering calories too much too fast can cause depression and irritability and other things. So unfortunately slow and steady is the way to go. Don't think of it as a diet but Changing your way of life. Hope this helps. 😊

This will take a while, so my advice is to be disciplined. Stick to it! The sooner you get healthier, the better your whole life will be. I didn't solve it in my 30's, and now in my 60's I look back and wish that I'd changed my life earlier. Best wishes for the win!

Hey, I started back in January and I’ve lost so far a little over 45lbs. The honest truth to losing weight is being mentally ready. I am a HUGE foodie. I went to culinary school and just love love love food. Who doesn’t? But I’ve tried in the past so many diets back when and gave myself time limits and all of that was just not realistic. And i managed to lose 30lbs once and gained it all back bc I simply wasn’t mentally ready. So my advice is be ready for the commitment and don’t stress. Bc I use to restrict myself from all foods. start slow..i’ve managed to eliminate breads for a while juices and sodas. And I do a High Protein and Low carb diet and it works. Also only eating by 12pm-6pm. No sugar and a lot of water. It is the hardest thing I have managed to routinely do but GIRL it is so worth it. 💕 much luck to you! YOU CAN DO IT! 👍🏽

losing weight is not too complicated. 70% or more of weight loss is based on calorie intake . you CAN lose a lot of weight without exercising. exercising helps yes, but it is not 100% necessary. a caloric deficit will make your body lose weight regardless of activity level. this caloric deficit can LOOK however you want it to as well. want burgers and fries? pizza? candy bar? salads? fish? ...what ever it is, just measure your portions and keep track of your daily total and stop when you get to your limit. the hard part is finding what you want to eat in sizes that won't zero out your intake limit for the day...but once you find that balance, its literally all down hill from there ❤

The key for me is to never let a bad day ruin the next day. You will slip. You will have bad days. It happens to all of us. But we don't look back. We look forward to the next day and recommit to try and make that one a good one. FWIW. Good luck. It sounds like you're already on a better path than before.

smaller goals, rinse and repeat... I was told by doctor in mid July to lose weight and reduce fat intake to avoid going on cholesterol meds. So I set a 3 month goal of 15 lbs when I go back for lipid panel. I don't own a scale so at 2 month Mark I had another unrelated health check and was DOWN 10 LBS. after Oct. 15 I will set a new goal for Christmas and I'll reward myself by buying a scale. I DONT EXERCISE. count calories and WATER WATER WATER. I plan on incorporating exercise in the next phase.

I can definitely relate to how you feel. I use to be intimidated of going to the gym. I dont like being around too many people and I've been trying to psych myself out of the "no one really care and is looking" mentality. I decided to finally break out of it and go to a YouFit that was in my area. I choose the one that I saw was almost always empty. I started to go to that one and I realized that everyone is minding their own business and isn't judgmental. I've been to gyms back in NYC that really felt like a meat market. I've been going since March and I love it. I even greet and chat with the regulars that are there. As far as food, I was thinking about that this morning. I love food and I was wondering what I could do differently so that I could actually start losing inches and fat...to get healthier. Should I change my weight training routine (which I don't even know if I"m doing it right but I see progress that I could lift heavier weights). You're not alone in this and perhaps some light could be shed on what we could do differently. I'm thinking of doing Insanity Shaun T. workouts seriies again. I loved it and it could be done at home. Don't think too much about it and just take the first steps the first day and continue on the next.

Get an outlet timer for your bedroom lamp and set it for 3 minutes before your alarm goes off. Alarm goes off and you're already awake. workout clothes, undies, hair tie on your nightstand. Pre workout drink immediately if your body tolerates that. Basically when you have pre workout there's no going back you HAVE to workout! So Basically, trickery. 🤘🤘🤘

So proud of you for taking this first step towards taking care of yourself! A lot of the comments offered great advice, and as for me, I like to keep it simple. 1-Stay in a calorie deficit. When you do the calculation on here for recommended daily calorie intake, take whatever number it calculates for you and subtract by 300. 2-As another commenter posted, the calories, can be a sandwich with a small bag of Doritos, a bowl of cereal, or oatmeal, a piece of chicken and veggies. Do not sabotage yourself into thinking 'healthy eating' is all chicken and veggies, it is portioning out everything you eat. Invest in a kitchen scale, best investment I ever made! Don't have to be fancy either, just a simple $5 kitchen scale at walmart. Measure out EVERYTHING, and be sure to log it. 3 - Move your body, check out some leslie sansone walking/jogging videos on youtube. I loved her videos and it will help get you started in the comfort of your own home! I wish you the absolute best, and feel free to reach out whenever you need!

Since you asked, my advice would be to intermittent fast 18-22 hours a day for an average of 19 hours a day. See where that gets you after 30 days. Make sure you “clean fast” when fasting. Drop the diet mentality of restricting. It’s not sustainable for 95% of people who will regain weight with calorie restrictions and over exercising. That’s proven for me. Over and over and over again. Eat what you want to satiety. I lost weight using IF eating hamburgers, fries and cake. And the next day salads and lentils. But I ate those things because I wanted them. Not because they were good, bad or indifferent to me. On weeks that I eat lower carb (because I want to) I’ll lose 3 lbs. On weeks I want lots more carbs I maintain or lose half a pound to a pound. I’m 53. I have more energy now than when I was 35. Running on keytones after 12-16 hours of fasting is AMAZING. I stay up until 11 pm and wake at 5 am, raring to go. I am primarily caretaker to a two year old granddaughter, have moved out of one property and into another, while caring for a third property and am dealing with a daughter with borderline personality disorder which is fucking breaking my heart. But…for the first time in my life I can tackle this all and more. And lose weight. And improve my health markers. I’ll be at my college weight or below by this time next year. Life is delicious. Don’t eat rice cakes. Eat the cake. And the delicious meal. And drink the wine. Then fast and allow your body and mind to do its job and heal you from the inside out.
