Ruhu's Journal, 10 August 2013

It was so strange, but nice in many ways -- after all the recent activity with both my boys home plus a friend of the oldest's, and DH not working as much or as long of hours as is his norm for the month of August, I had the night to myself last night. DH & younger son went to our lake cottage with my son's friend & his Dad, and older son & his friend went to visit a friend in Hartford. So, I finished my book & watched a chick flick -- no complaints here!

We're waiting to hear from a local college to see if oldest can transfer there. They have a computer science program with a major in video game design & development, which may be a major he's passionate about. Of course, the job perspectives won't be what they would have with an engineering degree, but at this point, he just needs to finish college. His other interest is to go into the Peace Corps & you need a college degree for that. He'd be a great candidate for the military & would have loved to enlist or do ROTC, but with his epilepsy, he's not eligible. It may preclude him from the Peace Corps too, but we'll have to see.

I'm off to cardio tennis this morning, then housework & bookkeeping this afternoon, mass at 4 and dinner with MIL, DH & younger son. It'll be my MIL's last chance to see him before he heads back to college next weekend. It'd be a road trip for he & I to Nashville. We leave next Sat, will drive Sat & Sun & I'll stay until Weds morning to move him into his new dorm. DH & I were discussing who'd go with him & as much as I hate the drive, I really didn't want to miss having the time with him & seeing his new digs. Luckily, DH couldn't take the time off with our Italy trip coming so soon -- we leave 9/5 & I'm getting so excited for it... plus it'd be great to have it so soon after saying goodbye to my 6'3" baby!

I'm doing well & feeling great, and excited about this new book I read, "Brain over Binge"... although at my age, the thought of using my brain for anything productive is getting scarier & scarier! I really am going to journal about it & hopefully will later today, as I must get going here -- tennis starts sons.

But being I go get cardio, I'll pray --

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

And again throughout this one day and each one moment, meal, bite & emotion, I'll pray, breathe, journal & express my way, being grateful for each of you my wonderful & supportive FS friends, my family & friends here and having my boys home together, and this life I love with the health and financial security to enjoy it! xoxox

I just knew it was electrical engineering. Trust me, if his interest is computing-related, he'll have equal prospects with a comp sci degree as an EE. I still prefer EEs for what we do, but that's because I'm really old school and, in my day, the comp sci degrees weren't out there. Fabulous, Ruth. That will work. Glad you got to enjoy your boys AND get 'me' time. How efficient are you? So what're your ride plans for today?

Thanks Heather! Coming from you, someone in the know, it really means a lot -- I don't really understand the difference between the computer & electrical engineering degree he was pursuing & the computer science one he hopes to move into. You've really eased some of my anxiety as he looks at his options. I think I'm going to just do the cardio tennis this morning & then ride with DH tomo morning. I've been riding & spinning more days in a row than I'm used to, which I need given our trip, but feel I need an "off day"... or at least my old muscles do! xoxox

I totally relate to the 'returning your son to college'... I too will be making a road trip soon...too soon...and btw, he's 6'3" also!! LOL! Enjoy him while you can!

totally get the "off day," except that cardio tennis isn't really off. LOL. Yeah, the comp sci degrees started around the 80s and even then they weren't what they are now. Lots of discrete structures, linear algebra, calc. Anyway, he'll be equally if not more respected for his comp sci degree as it's more pertinent today. software development is not a bad place. can't talk to the gaming thing but a specialized program can't hurt.

Good thing you had a nice relaxing evening last night because it sounds like you needed to be well rested to face your tasks for today. Wishing your son all the best - am sure he will find his niche.

Morning Ruth, I accidently deleted my l-o-n-g comment - sigh. Basically have a wonderful day; enjoy the road trip with your baby and I wish I could do Italy the same way as you but I don't have the physical stamina for a bike holiday. But I will make it to Italy one day, one of the placed on my bucket list :) And lastly I am sure your son's newest career choice/college switch will be just the ticket as we forget that we are not in charge of the master Plan, someone else is at the helm. also my daughter did a university degree, 4 years, in arts and science - and she didn't find a job in any way related BUT said that the training she received or the education she received, enabled her to do the job she is doing today - human resources education specialist - basically an event planner for a big accounting firm, making sure their staff's accountants' education is up to date, and organzing teaching events for competency plus food and fun thrown in. Nothing to do with arts and science, right? So we worry, it's our job, but I have faith that he will do well in his life - he has awesome parents, how can he not :)

6'3? Wow. LOL I'm sure you'll enjoy the trip to Nashville. Wish I could go with you (and take my bike). Speaking of... where are you and DH riding today? I'm jealous.

We'll stay right here in Fairfield. We are able to go right out our driveway & he knows many rides in the area (where as I still can get lost). We're right on the Easton border, so usually go up into Easton or Redding. I have done one longer ride down to the beach & into Westport, but I don't think we'll take the time for that this morning. It's long for me at about 30 miles, but that's nothing for you, my hero bike rider! It's another gorgeous day, here in the east, isn't it my friend? xoxox

It is a beautiful day. I have to take my graphics designer to take an exam, and I'll be visiting my 96 year old bff, but I hope I get a little ride in. Have fun!
