08willbegreat's Journal, 28 March 2008

so, as I suspected, my 1.2 pound loss of yesterday had a very short shelf-life, and seems to have expired today!! Was it due to the pasta salad containing chick peas (1/3 can), or my protein mix, or was it due to the running I started yesterday? It's baffling that I did everything right yesterday, including the water intake, and keeping well within my points, and yet, surrpise surprise, there's a slight gain, putting me right back in the plateau-zone. Anyhow, I'm gonna keep plodding on and do my best to ignore the numbers!!
168.8 lb Lost so far: 9.2 lb.    Still to go: 38.8 lb.    Diet followed 100%.
gaining 7.0 lb a week

When you are doing everything right, you know it is just a matter of time before the numbers reflect it. I think we are all getting better at not freaking out over the numbers so much as we used to. By seeing that it is a regular occurance in everyone's journey, it helps us realize that there isn't anything to stress over. I think that is part of the magic of this site - seeing the commonality between us. You already advised massiverally about the hidden dangers of chick pea consumption and many of us have seen a jump in the scales following exercise (especially new exercise). So there really is no mystery. This, too, shall pass!

What is this mystery surrounding Chick Peas???

I don't know anymore now....my theory originally has been that eating chick peas cause a temporary gassiness and water retention, which may show up as a weight gain on the scale. Recent results experienced by Massiverally's and mine weight graphs confirm this theory. However, two problems with this: 1) I just can't seem to find any real findings on the internet that confirm the side effects of chick peas (in fact many sources actually say they are high in fiber and receommend them as a remedy for constipation!), and 2) I LOVE CHICK PEAS!! In fact, tonight we're going to this great mediterraneon restaurant that's famous for their hummus, falafel etc. that's prepared from chick peas--and I don't know whether to by-pass these favorites and opt for a basic greek salad and a lentil soup, or go for it, and damn the consequences!! Anyhow, so there you have---the facts and fiction of CHICK PEAS!!

I totally buy in to the chick pea theory - and it fits with the high-fiber/anti-constipation sources too - I think during the day or two following, they are holding on to the water, and travelling slowly through the intestines, until they bid adeiu and the water weight is magically gone. This morning I was low again, but then a coworker brought in for lunch a slow cooker full of Weight Watchers 5 point CHICK PEA Moroccan Stew which was AWESOME - but I'm cursing the chick peas because tomorrow is weigh-in for the challenge.

PPS - can't be fat b/c you didn't over eat 3500 calories yesterday to create it. Water baby, pure water.

i know, i know, i know I'm obsessing---but it's not over the pound gained! Rather, I'm trying to figure out how our bodies react to different things we do--and whether it is a science or not. I'm trying to find my balance with foods and nutrition--and the range is quite wide, wherein on one end, we can just go by a simple formula (eating more greens, fruits, whole wheat stuff, drink plenty of water, do away with white stuff ie. sugar salt and flour, and exercise), or on the other end, be quite obsessive about each point, measuring, counting, watching each move with diet, exercise, etc....Hopefully this journey will teach me the right balance that works for my body.

I believe it is a science. Have you read Dr. Oz's "You: On a Diet"? It goes into great detail about hunger and satiety hormones and how to get them on our side. They advise against measuring and counting because it is not something one can do long term or away from home. Anyway, you are a true scientist and I know you will draw the proper conclusions from your observations over time - but there are so many variables to consider!

This is a fantastic example of why it's good to keep a journal of what you eat. If your weight goes up, or if you have more energy, less energy, etc, you can look at your food journal and see if there is a pattern.
