I know some of you like to weigh in every day or two. If that works for you, then by all means do it. However, I also know some of you are not seeing the results you expect and are getting discouraged. Do not despair, because I have determined scales are evil and have a tendency to do more harm than good. I notice a pattern when I weigh. For example, say I lose 10 lbs. [Hooray!] Then I do bi-weekly or weekly weigh-ins, and this is what it looks like..

WEEK 1: OK, last week I was 280, how I am looking this week ... 285?!? WTF!
WEEK 1.5: OK, last weigh-in was an aberration, now let's see what the scales tell me ... 384. How did I only lost 1 measly pound???
WEEK 2: Let see if I gained any this week ... 282. Well that's progress at least.
WEEK 3: Maybe this week I can get back down to where I was a month ago ... 279. About damn time!
WEEK 3.5: Am I still under 280? Yes, 274!
WEEK 4: I am on a roll now ... 271! I rock! I will be under 200 by year's end!
WEEK 5: Time to drop below 260 ... 277?!? What the Hell???

And then the cycle repeats. I am not sure why my body does this, but the jumps in weight are very discouraging. So I now only weigh once a month. Last day of the month and them compare it to the previous month and THAT is what I log.

In the end, the force of gravity on my body in a certain location on a particular Tuesday doesn't matter. That I am constantly moving towards my goal DOES. That my level ground walking speed has increased from 3.0 mph to 4.3 mph is what counts. That I have been able to double the weight on my resistance training matters. That I am wearing 2x shirts for the first time since the 1990s is what matters.

Everything else is just noise.

Sounds like you're doing a good job balancing fat loss with muscle building. It'll ebb-and-flow like that till you get down to the weight your body wants it to be. Much success to you!

You are very right and I might start weighing in at once a month. It will take my mind off the weight and start making me think how much better I am eating and how much my clothes are getting bigger. Thanks for your post. Glad to see you have a little progress. Keep on keeping on. We both have this. :)

I went up 4.2 pounds in one day and freaked out! now its slowly going down like .4, am not going to depend on the scale but will still track the weight. Great job on your progress!

You have the right idea weighing once a month. I remember weight watchers many years ago. People would take off shoes, earrings, and false teeth to register.2 pound weight loss. LOL 😂. Keep enjoying walks, loose bras, and the way your watch fits. Take heart ❤️ you are moving forward.

Hi folks. I read that you shouldn't pay too much attention to scales. Put on the same pair of pants or skirt and see the inches you have lost. I was doing the same roller coaster scale thing, but I noticed my waist was getting smaller. Start today, measure waist, then check again after your clothes feel loose. Weigh ins are not the best way sometimes. Good luck to all.

I usually weigh one or twice a week. If nothing is happening I "tighten" up a bit on calories or exercise. Then when I lose some I post

You're right, as far as my experience goes. I hadn't weighed in years before FS, just went by clothing and general comfort, so I have absolutely no idea what scale numbers "improved" during my 18 months of lowish carb. Wasn't going to weigh here, either, and was kind of horrified to observe the fixation many members have and the amount of emotional work that goes into talking oneself over the disappointment, and into reassuring others who are saddened by gains. To each her/his/their own, though. I ended up finding out my weight when I had body composition scans done. Am ok with it since I'm trying to plateau here anyway. My goals aren't scale-related, and that's harder to measure, so I understand the appeal of working toward straightforward numbers.

I admit it, I weigh daily. And I've certainly had those conversations that Poofwizard documented above - kind of funny, really! I have learned to take such fluctuations into consideration. I also realize that I've lost almost 10 lbs since January - not a great deal of weight, and certainly had some "gainback", but have learned not to cry or beat myself up over it. Overall the numbers are DOWN, and that's what matters; plus the running speed is UP, the waistline is DOWN a bit, and the pants are fitting LOOSE. These things are much more important than the number on the scale. Still, for me at least, it's important to weigh daily to keep tabs on the overall weight, make sure the numbers don't start inching upwards again. I've hit my goal weight twice over the past 10 years, only to gain it all back and then some - now THAT'S upsetting!
