08willbegreat's Journal, 18 June 2008

So, today I went to my scheduled annual exam with my physician, but I explained to him how I've been on this self-designed nutirition and exercise plan, and I want to ensure that I'm doing all the right things, as far as objective tests would show. So, on the basis of my reading of a fantastic, scientific book, "Body Engineering", and on the basis of Leanne's list of tests she'd mentioned on her journal a few weeks back (Thanks, Leanne!), I made up a long list of things I want to doctor to check out, run tests, etc.

And he did. He got enthused and immediately got on the band-wagon to see how I'm faring when he saw that I'd lost 18-20 pds already, and--here's the best part--my resting heart rate has dropped down to 60!!! Even the nurse remarked immediately that I must be exrrcising becasue the numbers show that! My BP has also improved (96/64), and tomorrow I'll find out how the rest of the vitals, blood, cholestrol, triglycerides, sugar, hydration, urine etc. all test out...looking forward to it! It'll serve as a good baseline for bi-annual checkups even after I lose all the weight, and to help with the lifelong maintenance phase. Oh, and the doctor also mentioned that the university where I work has a fabulous recreation center (fitness center), and they do a complete lifestyle assessment and guidance and he strongly recommended I take advantage of it. In fact, after looking at the rec center's website (which is right across my office, btw--I can even see everyone working out in the gorgeous facility), looks like there are tons of exciting programs there. So, I really should take advantage of the resources we have there (I didn't want to pay the extra amount when I have a gym right in the bldg, but I think I should do this--even for just 2-3 mths, to get a good idea from the trainers there re exercise form and such, and perhaps enroll in some fun classes, and maybe even take up racquetball or squash---I've always looked at those and thought that'd be a great way to get any pent-up stress, anxiety, and aggression out! LOL!
So, I'll stop by tomorrow when I go to work, and see what they have to offer. And I'll find out my lab results..can't wait!!

Other than that, weight was hovering around 160 this morning (plus or minus a few pts), so I suppose I'm close to the pre-last weekend loss..

I worked out only 20 mins today (135K) on treadmill. Planned to go back down again in the evening, but I guess that won't be happening. Tomorrow, I have to be at work early, so I'll be sure to get to the gym early and put in a good solid hour. Tomorrow evening is a big winetasting event (a blindtasting competition! I'm excited!). I'll mostly taste, swirl and swish it around--and then spit it out! I don't want the wine-related calories more than a day in the week. God! Summer events get so hard--there's a happy hour cruise on a boat on Friday, a solstice dinner on Saturday, followed by a hangout at a blues' joint at night, and then my own houseparty on sunday----all of these events involve lot of decadent foods around--and alcohol!!

That's ok, though.

One thing at a time--I'll dodge each of these bullets one at a time...like today, I dodged one! That is, while on my way to the doctor's, I passed by this wonderful-smelling, favorite middle-eastern eatery, and so badly was reminded of my enjoyment in the old days of a good plate of hummus, or my favorite len-chilli soup, or the awesome mujadara pocket---all of these sound seemingly healthy, but upon checking some online calorie-websites, I found that they are loaded in sodium, oil, or rice in the majadara...the pita has many points too..so, not a good choice..I looked in a store window and saw my skinnier reflection, and chanted a couple times, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"..and the feeling passed. Dodged a bullet. Again, on my return from the doctor's, it was lunch-time (and I hadn't eaten anything as I had to get the lab-tests done on an empty stomach), and here it was close to 1 pm--and now that eatery was in its' full lunch-time glory of emanating all sorts of fragranaces--even across the street! Once again, I just reminded myself I don't need this indulgence---one bad move and it's going to set me back many steps...I don't need that discouragement. I'll have my subway sandwich waiting at home--and that'll be good, healthy, nutrition. I did allow myself my daily indulgence of coffee and an almond biscotti, but then came home and had my subway.

The rest of the day has been good meal-wise; I'm under my points. Only concern is, I've had carbs for both, lunch and dinner today (lunch was the sandwich on whole wheat bread and for dinner I made a whole wheat/spinach pasta with veggies, grated parmesan, home made pesto, basil, and some bell peppers. Again, more carbs than usual, so it'll be a good test to see tomorrow if the scales show an increase, I know that'll a good, objective way to test whether carbs are to be watched-out for, or not. I'd like to think ww is not as strict about carbs as Atkins, but I'll let the scales teach me one way or the other.

Meals and points:
Breakfast: none
Lunch
: 1/2 subway whole wheat veggie delite with american cheese and sweet onion and mustard dressing (5 pts)
coffee with cream (1), and almond biscotti (3)
Snack: few peanuts (2-3), 1 veggie burger patty (2)
Dinner: 1 bowl pasta with pesto (some oil) (6-10 pts) and veggies

Total: 24 pts at most

That's so great that you are getting checked out medically and the preliminary results look very encouraging! Wonderful bp and resting heart rate. That facility at the university does sound worth trying out for a few months at least and then you can decide from there. Good job "dodging the bullet" and sticking to your healthy guns. I am interested in finding out if your carby day does have an effect on your weight. If so, it will be something I should investigate in myself as I've mostly just payed attention to keeping my fruits and veggies up. You have such a busy social calendar. I'm jealous! It sounds like you have so much fun. Enjoy your wine tasting!

MMmmmmm... how I do love the East Indian foods, too!! YUMM-O! Great job on passing it up! Yes, summer seems to be as hard, if not harder than Christmas time for me. Many get togethers, celebrations and outing that involve so many temptations. However, that is what I call "life" and we are living it and will be living it longer and more enjoyable for the extra efforts we are putting in! One bullet at a time, baby! Have a great weekend!

Well done on so many fronts! I'm glad you went for a full health assessment - good luck with the results (which reminds me, I need to post mine!), although I'm sure they'll all be just fine. Fantastic willpower walking avoiding the temptations of the glorious middle eastern goodies. The weight is holding down well too, which must be particularly hard for such a social butterfly! Have a great wine tasting - I'm so jealous!! :)

You seem to be wine tasting all the time...that explains why you always seem so cheerful! (are you part of some wine tasting club?) You have better will power than me because if I walked past a middle eastern store then I wouldnt be able to resist. I love the idea of doing every test possible to ensure you are healthy. I just changed insurances but am thinking of scheduling something similar for myself. I have always thought about doing it, but after reading Lucybells journal, I have become more encouraged to do so. Keep it up girl..I know those pounds are just melting off!

Great job dodging that bullet. Every little effort like that adds up in the long run. You're doing great and it's wonderful to see the doctor's recognition of this! I'll be curious to hear how the university rec center works for you. At my last university, it was great and I went there many days during lunch (they had a change of clothes, relatively private showers, I was unlikely to see my students in the locker room, etc.) I was also able to work with a personal trainer, which was absolutely fabulous. Other places I've been the university rec center is a madhouse --mostly a student dating scene-- and I wanted to steer clear. The university I'm at now has a facility for faculty/staff that is separate from the student rec center, which I like quite a bit.
