Nimm's Journal, 02 May 2012

Thought my weight graph was leveling off so I re-charted the April numbers in Excel. The trendline showed just a 1 pound increase for the month. That would explain why my lifts haven't been increasing too much the last few weeks.

Bumping up the calories from 3100 to 3200, maybe a little more.
Still planning to switch back to a cut around 180-183. So much for cutting the body fat in time for summer.

Getting my bulk/cut cycles lined up for the seasons is a lost cause at this point - if I have another 6 to 8 lbs left to gain, that will take me 3 more months, at the right pace. Dropping the 12-14 lbs of body fat that I think I'll need to shed will take another few months. Might be back on track for next year. It's not a terrible problem to have :) Anyway, I just do my lifting in my bedroom. I have a weight bench and a set of squat stands; that's all I need. I'd prefer a gym, but the nearest one is a good 30 minute drive.

wow. Well you have this down to a science, Nimm. What's the bf% now? Something crazy low I'm sure.

Thanks helewis. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out my maintenance calorie level, but yes, I do have control over the process now. At 3100 calories I was gaining at just around 2 lbs/month. As I got heavier, that has started to level off - exactly as it should. I just didn't see the slowdown until I charted April's numbers separately. The whole process became a lot easier once I: a) counted my calories -closely- and b) filtered out the water weight fluctuation noise by using an Excel trendline to judge my true weight. It's made a huge difference. The body fat % is actually higher than it's been in a while. If you're not on steroids, and not going through puberty (the same thing, basically), the best you can hope for is to gain muscle and fat about 50/50 when you're lifting and in a calorie surplus. Hence bulking and cutting cycles - add muscle and fat, then diet off the fat. Repeat. Since I'm nearing the end of this bulk, my body fat % is actually higher than it's been in a while, I'm guessing around 17 or 18%. I'm not comfortable letting it get much higher. Fortunately, the lean mass that has been growing underneath it makes me look and feel very, very different than the last time I was at this weight. It's turned me evangelical for weightlifting, which I avoided like the plague for the first 39 years.
