~Daily Protein wayeeee too low~
So, just for the heck of it, I decided to look up how many grams of protein, carbs, and fat I "should" be getting a day and compared them with my daily averages. I made sure to look up these averages for someone that is indeed working out and attempting to eat healthy. My fat and carbs are decent. A little on the low side, but not horrible by any stretch.

But, my oh my, this girl's average protein intake is wayeeeee to low for a girl that is working out and doing strength training 4-5 times a week. I had to chuckle. My first thought was, "well, no wonder I've been so tired and suffering from DOMs all the time!" Now, it makes me wonder if this is also part of the reason I was diagnosed with severe anemia back when I lost big in my 30's. I wasn't even paying attention to all of that stuff. My blood count dropped from a 15 to a 10 and I was getting winded just going around the block, but I had dropped a lot of weight. When blood count comes in at an 8, they start considering a blood transfusion, but my doc was kind and told me, "you better start eating fish and steak like you drink water, because your blood cells look pretty darn wimpy and pathetic too!" LOL. I did exactly what she said and brought it up to a 13 with vitamins, LOTs of red meat, and spinach.

My iron didn't drop that low on purpose, I frankly didn't know how much protein I needed to get in my system when dieting and I wasn't even exercising then. Teaches you how important educating oneself is when it comes to these things. I've been noticing the dizziness and fatigue for the past 2 weeks, especially after workout days. I've also noted, I've been getting winded very easily like I did back in those days, and like then I thought I was just tired! LOL...sometimes I'm clueless.

There is an easy remedy here. I do notice how much I feel better on the weekends after working out and drinking my whey protein shake. The muscle soreness is a whole lot better as well. I don't need to slam down nearly as much motrin on the weekend as I do during the week when I don't drink the shake. That shake has just the amount of protein I need to hike up my average protein intake, ergo I need to find a way to drink the protein shakes on the days I know I'm going to work out. I have a busy schedule. I'm thinking the best time might be at work. It will increase my daily caloric intake, but not by much and on work out days when I'm burning 700 calories at a time, it will be needed. I'll be curious to see if this makes a difference in my fatigue levels. Wanna make a bet it will?

In the meantime, today is my splurge day and to give my body a MUCH needed boost, I'll make sure there's some meat in everything I splurge on. Tomorrow I'll go to the store and get a container for my protein powder and some almond milk to bring to work so I can get started on this...

interesting read. I've been dizzy on and off. I put it down to my vertigo. my protein intake isn't that good even on my protein days and I've started working out 5 times a week. maybe I should try the protein shakes. keep us informed of the results.

Thank you, Mrs. Maths! And, you bet ginercaloriecounter! I think I'll also remove my morning scone. Not that this is the reason for my dizziness or muscle fatigue LOL. So far, it hasn't hindered weight loss, but it will make room for the daily shake. I like to mix the powder with 6 oz of almond milk. The total cal count is 160, and for all that protein and calcium, it really isn't too shabby.

I am a protein girl. I need more protein than average due to my hypothyroidism. When it drops too low, I feel horrible. I work out HARD at least four days a week and I eat protein both before and after my workout (only a bit afterwards, but it seems like I crash if I don't get it). Good on you for paying attention to your body! We all need to do more of that, but we need to listen honestly. When it says we need a fourth slice of pizza it's probably lying! :)

I'm right there with ya AZSouthsideGirl. When I contemplate back on my anemic days, I never gained weight when I upped my protein, and I felt a lot better. I didn't even think to notice my lack of protein except everyone on this site seems to keep track of percentage of protein, carbs, fat, etc. Not that I don't, but just in a different way. If it's got a lot of vitamins and minerals and it's cheap in cal, I try to make it the majority of what I eat and make room caloricly for the other stuff. But, I only technically eat 2 meals a day. I don't eat dinner. I honestly don't have an appetite after I work out. But, I can fit that shake in during the day time. I also just read when calculating your daily calories, you need to be sure to minus the calories burned and use the net total for the amount consumed for that day. If that's the case, I'm only getting around 1000 calories in during the days I work out, and that's too low. I think I need the shake! lol

I drink my protein shake in the morning and sometimes even another at night mixed with ice and Hershey's special dark cocoa and sweetener. I only use one scoop of the powder and I use a veggie based protein powder because the whey formula became too hard on my digestive system. But my doctor lectured me that we must have a minimum of 64oz of fluid per day and 50-70 g of protein. So I try to stay in that range. The carbs appear on their own I swear to God!
