different things work for different people. I'm horrible at keeping a food journal, and when I forced myself to, it depressed me so much I just ate and ate. For me, the trick is to drink 16oz of water every morning before getting out of bed, and getting on the scale every day first thing when I get out of bed and writing down my weight. If three numbers show up on that scale, I pay VERY close attention to my diet every day until I see a two digit number again. After losing the same 100lbs 3 times in 30 years, this is what finally has worked for me. I have kept it off since 2012. Do whatever works for you!
