Shellie_AU's Journal, 02 September 2015

I haven't really contributed as yet since joining apart from my intro., (due to a variety of reasons!), therefore I thought it was time I did.

Firstly, I hate referring to the goal of weight loss as being on a diet - I detest the word "diet" as it conjures up for me denial, un-enjoyment etc etc. Rather, I see it as eating clean and healthy along with regular exercise.

My journey began in January 2015. At that point I weighed 68.7kg, not a good look when you're only 149cm's! My last weigh in on 20 August was 60.8kg.

I train with a personal trainer twice weekly, mainly weight resistance & I also attend group sessions at my local, council gym 3-4 times a week(quite cheap given I'm now a senior). My favourite sessions are pilates, Low Impact and Strength & Tone.

In terms of my food intake, I have kept completely away from any processed foods, take away etc. I have also tended to stay away from a lot of foods marked "low fat", as the spin off from this is, there is nearly always more sugar (e.g. low fat milk, low fat cottage cheese, yogurt etc). I eat a lot of fish, both tinned salmon and fresh fish, kangaroo meat, lambs fry, lean steak etc., & I've opted to eating main meals from a small dinner plate, a bit bigger than a bread and butter plate.

This is my 3rd journey, having lost weight twice over the past 8 years only to put it all back on!! My goal now is to establish a life time change in terms of my food intake and exercise, rather than just losing weight.

I have written down my goals, plus a clear plan of action as to how I am going to achieve this, which I have on my fridge. I revisit it every few weeks and have changed some of the time frames, so it now reflects something more achievable.

I also allow myself "cheat" days, minus the guilt e.g. once monthly I have lunch with a girlfriend, and I eat what I feel like, sometimes even dessert. If this is going to be a life time change, I need to be able to maintain it for life, and I know what I'm doing now is possible, even though my journey to a leaner, healthy body is taking a bit longer.

I guess I'd like to lose another 5 kg, but more realistically I'm more focused now on how I look in the mirror, how my clothes fit and how my energy and fitness levels have improved. So far so good, as I feel great!

My next weigh-in is Monday 7 September - I am hoping to be below 60kg by then :D

Cheers and happy travels :D
134.5 lb Lost so far: 0 lb.    Still to go: 13.2 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Hi Shellie_AU, Nice to see you here ...... although having just read your post I'm thinkin' ..... now if Shellie's "only" 180cm which is close to 6' tall and is sitting on approx 60kg now & wanting to get to 55kg ....... we'll be able to lie you down and slide you under a door girlfriend!!!!!" 'Cos I am 162cm ~ approx 5'2" and weighed 60kg for my 60th birthday 4.5 years ago & that was my ideal weight ~ mmmmmm man was I proud of myself then. Now I've come down from 95.5kg to 89.5kg in the past month and I look like Tweedle Dee standing in Tweedle Dum's shadow!!!!! BUT if I could be stretched up to 180cm; 89.5kg wouldn't look quite so morbidly obese on me ~ so if that wasn't a misprint & you truly are 180cm Shellie then I am here to officially tell you that I am soooooo green eyed jealous 'cos that's all I ever really wanted in my life ~ was not to have ducks disease, with my bum dragging far to close to the ground. I'm so pleased you made it to the page because I think you'll find some really good stuff here; I particularly like the bar code scan that you can use to enter your foods into the food list; I love the way that your food lists for the day are adding up your Plrotien, Carbs, Fat, Sugar, Kj etc throughout the day which allows you to calculate what you have eaten or how you can change what you were thinking of eating which to me is a great function because it really makes you aware of what is wise and nutritional to eat and allows you to shop accordingly. I love the exercise calculator and each day now it means more and more to do a variety of different exercises because I love to see my kl exercised climbing against my kjs eaten ~ every day I am eating pretty much all of my RDI but each day my exercised kms exceed that so that's obviously why I'm losing steadily every day ~ it's 6kg now in 26 days ~ I am thrilled with myself & my pension went into my account today so I was able to go and collect that 2nd hand exercise bike I bought for $50 ~ it's a beauty with the fully detailed little computerised calculator so that's now tucked behind my lounge chair in my little unit & as well as doing 1.5 to 2hrs daily at the pool (with my waterproof MP3 player) zoning out and doing my own circuit to good music, I can ride my bike for maybe 1/2 hr in the evenings as well as the odd walks I've started throwing in there since I've started doing these fantastic stretches for my back in my kitchen & I am feeling strong enough in my hips and back to walk ~ it really is amazing what a difference a 6kg loss does to an old fatty like me ~ I'm rapt in case you couldn't tell ~ my friends are telling me that I am looking radiant & optimistic & they can hear the enthusiasm in my voice ..... the belief that I really am going to get this done is evident!!!! Anyway dear, I sincerely hope that you are keeping your aches and pains at bay at the moment & that you're in a sunny side of Oz; keep your spirits up high & your calories down low 😆 Bye bye for now ~ Jilly.beans

I just thought of perhaps a way you could utilize your local council gym, so you could take advantage of all the equipment and the knowledge of the fitness trainers. You're now a senior like me, enquire how much it would cost you e.g.I only pay #30.00 per month, and that gives me unlimited access to all between the hours of 9.00am - 4.00pm Have a great day! I'm off to training :D

Bahahaha ha Shellie ~ that WAS a huge typo!!!!! So, in actual fact you're only about 4'10.5" ...... no wonder you feel that 55kg is closer to your ideal weight...... you sound just as invigorated as I have been feeling about the exercise factor ~ but I don't know if we have a Council Gym; I live on the coast & there was a Julia Gillard Government Incentive to encourage Australians to get fit by installing small outdoor gyms along the coastal walkways ie. a bike, an elyptic walker, various stretch bars, a bench press, a leg extender & a few steps ~ I went after ours was built in the summer months earlier this year whilst recouperating from my hip surgery at about 7.30am & rode the bike for 1/2 hr, 15mins on the elyptic & 15 mins on the leg extension and then went across the car park to the beach with my chair, big Eski bag with water, sliced oranges & apples & a good book and sat in the early sun for 1.5hrs ...... It's a glorious life if you can get it 😊 ~ and my theory is brown fat is a whole lot prettier than white fat ..... and I'll start back doing that again in a few weeks ~ I've got a friend in hospital now who's just had her hip replaced & so after she's home I'll pick her up in the mornings to take her for a walk & we'll get her into my recouperating routine at the beach ~ walking and all of the above mentioned exercises are the very best thing for new hips ~ and I have two. The problem with the outside gyms though are that when the weather isn't good you tend to stay at home feeling sorry for yourself ~ one's demeanour can so easily change when we're robbed of the sunshine ~ I instantly become an eating machine and a sloth because it gets me down so badly ~ unfortunately my unit is on the South side & therefore very dark ~ I had skylights installed but of course you have to have full sunshine to make them be really effective ~ so somehow I must motivate myself to get out!!! Get out of the house or the damage sets in!!!!! ie .... a 95.5kg morbidly obese body. So that's why I started going to the pool which has always been my exercise of choice each time I've needed to lose weight or was motivated enough to maintain it & I love exercising in the water but our pool is so cold & I have a susceptibility to chest infections which have turned into pneumonia ~ five in the past eighteen months ~ each worse than the last SOOO I am getting a custom made titanium short leg/short sleeved wetsuit to keep my chest & arthritic lower back warm throughout the year when I have lost the bulk of my weight which will keep me going to the pool on the days I can't go to the beach 👍🏽 ...... Ooooops gotta go ...... Just saw the time ..... Catch up soon 😃
