Today I have decided to get serious and do something about my weight. February 2013 I gave up smoking resulting in a whopping 12kgs gained. I need motivation and support with this, if anyone is able to guide me in the right direction of meal plans & exercise regimes I would appreciate this...

Don't get discouraged. Losing weight takes time so be patient with yourself and constantly keep moving forward. I am also trying to get serious about losing weight so you are not alone. My main thing is sticking with it even if I have to do it alone. I think ex-smokers have an advantage! You've already proven to yourself that you have the willpower and strength. I would say counting calories is a good way to start. I think Fat Secret calculates the recommended daily calories too high, so check out a few different online calculators and decide what you're comfortable with. Good luck!
