kiddienurse's Journal, 25 June 2013

I'm totally new to blogs so here goes...am trying to lose weight in preparation for bariatric surgery. Started out at 370lb. about the first of April and am now at 352lb. Have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes and have decided to eat as though I already have diabetes since I seem to need a little more protein to keep my blood sugar up. Lots of diabetes in my family (both sides) so it's a miracle I've not gotten it yet; recently had a good friend pass away from Type 2 so I have an extra incentive to try to prevent it as I saw what she went through. I have severe osteoarthritis in both knees so it's very difficult for me to exercise and very much limits my mobility. Also I see my son who will turn 40 this week beginning to have the same problems with his weight that I do; I'd like to be a good example for him also.
Feeling good about my motivation this time; am looking at this as a permanent change, not just a temporary fix. I welcome comments to my journal; hope we can help each other!!

Have you tried water exercise. Walking in water, dancing in water, weights, calasthenics (ok, I can't spell it). It is so easy on your joints, it feels good and it works! Our fitness center has a "river" where you can walk with or against the current. You have already lost a significant amount of weight. Keep up the good work--I am also worried about one of my children that I see following in my steps (about 40 also!). Bonnie

Nice to hear from you, Bonnie...I've tried water exercise and LOVED it but my local YMCA is the only option for that in this area and their monthly cost is not a possibility for me right now. Am hoping to start back by the end of the year at the latest. I usually have difficulty losing weight without exercising unless I cut back drastically on my carbs so we'll see how it goes :-)

my daughter's family was able to get a greatly reduced scholarship, membership....I was surprised as they had a decent income. It is at least asking about. Also, some insurances will pay for or help pay for a membership if a doctor prescribes it. I know nothing of your circumstances, but with the weight and pending surgery I would approach all three sources: YWCA, Doctor, Insurance--maybe even your kids (if you have them) about a 3 or 6 month membership for your birthday, early Christmas, or just because gift. You are doing so well that I think asking for this is a logical next step. However, I actually have a membership that I am not using and I feel shame at this moment for that carelessness on my part. I need to take my own advice and USE this wonderful gift that I have.
