Deb_N's Journal, 14 November 2014

Hello! Here I am again, arriving late to FatSecret and this is going to be rambling, because I don't have extra time to make it neat and full of the best grammar. lol I've had a busy day, going out of town to see my medical doctor. He was very happy about my weight loss, but cautioned me not to go below 130 pounds. I said yes, I will be careful. He was glad that I had kept my blood sugar in check. My A1C is 4.7 now. I do not eat things with added sugar. I am not diabetic now and I don't want to eat anything that will raise my blood sugar and make my doctor put me back on the diabetes pills. My cholesterol was good and I am not in the danger zone anymore because I eat 1/2 cup oats and an apple every day and I limit fish, chicken and tuna salad to once or twice a month. My doctor said he was proud of me and I have good discipline. I said I worked hard to lose weight by eating healthy and exercising. I really didn't know how sick I was, but after I started losing the weight I have felt healthier. I am still losing weight so I need to start eating more calories so I can maintain my weight. A relative who does not live with me asked me to write up what I eat every day so he can try to lose weight. So I've been writing it up and will have to finish it soon and email him. I wish you all good luck. Keep working toward your goal. I know you can do it!
134.4 lb Lost so far: 67.6 lb.    Still to go: 0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
losing 2.8 lb a week

Great job Deb, Your A1C is outstanding. I am surprised to see you limit your protein intake like fish and chicken to just once or twice per month. Are you getting your protein from other sources like beans?

That is awesome Deb!!!!!- and your Doctor is correct. Believe or not people can over diet and get too thin!!!!- note I think I was too thin maybe once in Mt life-Lol- but that was when I got out of hospital after after brain bleed/blood pressure issue when I was 31- no problems since then!!!

definitely one can get too thin!! I've been there back in late 20's and early 30's. I worked hard to gain weight. 5'6" and 95 pounds is not good. I hadn't tried to get that low, having children and breast feeding zapped the pounds. Deb, awesome job on your docs visit!! You are a poster child here that changing some lifestyle habits do work.

The conventional wisdom is to eat two servings of fish such as tuna and salmon a week.

I could add some calories by eating meat. I was eating baked chicken and fish and tuna salad, but stopped eating them two months ago. I wanted my cholesterol to be good for this doctor checkup. I am looking forward to eating some turkey on Thanksgiving. :)

Deb. The only calorie source that doesn't affect insulin or it's antagonist hormone, glucagon, is fat. Carbs push up blood sugar. More protein in the diet will do the same at some point. Protein increases glucagon which pushes blood sugar up, as opposed to insulin which pushes blood sugar down. It's a balancing act. I'm overjoyed to see your results regarding diabetes. Keep it in check. It will save your eyes and possibly even your limbs in the future. Eat well. Eat right. I love turkey too. If 'having more' is eating turkey, that's way, way better than eating pie or some such thing. Way to go.

Wonderful, isn't it when the doctor says something positive for a change?

Thanks, everyone! There is protein in a lot of the foods that I eat, but it's not enough if I don't eat meat. So I began having two scoops of whey protein powder mixed with one cup of water every day. I only used one scoop a day because it is expensive, but after a few months, I thought I save money by not eating junk, so I need the protein for my health. This was the best change that I did, because I was low in protein almost every day.
