Deb_N's Journal, 03 September 2014

My father had diabetes and took Metformin pills. He never stopped eating sugar and thought as long as he took the pills he could eat anything that he wanted. If I knew then what I know now about diabetes, I would have pushed him to eat better. When he passed away from a heart attack, I was stunned. That was one of the reasons that I started walking and eating right. I want to be healthy and happy. I want to be around when my grandchildren are born some day. Good luck, everyone!

Too bad that your catalyst had to be such a sad event, but it pushed you toward better choices so your family history didn't repeat. My mother and her 2 brothers had heart attacks. Killed one uncle, killed my mother, and damaged the other uncle. I will NOT follow that tradition.

The food we eat is responsible for a lot of our illnesses. I don't have that experience to share, but I'm happy that you have the experience of being able to abandon your pills to share and drive that point home. Keep on saying loud and clear on your posts. Awareness is the key.

You are a wonderful example for your FS friends and even more for your children as they become aware of how food shapes their lives. J

Great drop, Deb! Most of us don't realize how valuable our health is as soon as we should.

Thank you, everyone! Whenever I think that I should have lost weight sooner, I just push that negative thought away, because I wasn't ready to eat right and exercise back then. The important thing is that I'm doing it now. Thanks for being with me on my weight loss journey! ♥

So sorry to hear that. My grandma has diabetes and takes her pills while refusing to eat any carbs. I'm constantly on her about letting her blood sugar get too low but it's in one ear and out the other. Low blood sugar will kill you much faster than high blood sugar. I guess that just goes to show how poorly educated the majority of people are when it comes to what is healthy, how those foods effect our blood sugars and how to properly treat diabetes. Doctors push meds, meds, meds, a nutrition course would probably be far more valuable to these patients. Proud of you for the changes you have made, my reasons are the same as yours :)

You have done super-Your weight loss has been super!!!!/ Sorry to hear about the passing of your father. It reminds me of something when I was young growing up in Pittsburgh. One of the families that lived below me and my mother that we associated with. My friends father has diabetes and ate spaghetti drank tons of Mountain Dew and Pepsi regular. I remember when my mom went shopping with them, he had a cart of Soda alone and a cart of food, I remember this as a kid, because I remember laughing at all the soda they bought-Anyway a week before he had to go to the doctor he will do what he was suppose to do so the blood work came out normal. Remember this was in the 1970's., Unfortunatley one day they found him dead in the morning in his bed. Great job Deb!!!! Losing weight the right way!!! Congrats!!!!!

I too Deb am sort of angry at myself for not having done this sooner. But I'm starting to think that a lot of dieting success cannot be done without maturity. It takes maturity to be able to be persistent, patient, have faith in the outcome during struggles, and accept all of the ups and downs, thinking of your health as very valuable etc. There's also the information that was not so easily accessible as today because of internet.

We think we are indestructible while we are actually so fragile... and need to take good care of ourselves because nobody else can do it for us. Thank you for reminding that, Deb.

I cringe when a family friend with diabetes does his insulin shots in lieu of paying attention to what he eats/drinks. He devours sweets and beer: young guy, thin, will probably kill himself with his lifestyle and diabetes. Be careful if you are diabetic, control your diet, exercise, be good to yourself.
