Teddy's Journal, 04 May 2007

I don't have much time to enter much right now. However my biggest goal is to make a shift back to a healthier and more active lifestyle. The graduate school, new parent, dual career life has drained much of my time and latitude for exercising. I want to reverse that shift somewhat and build in exercise into my schedule. This means doing more active things with my family and exercising on my own when I have time (basically in the evenings after our youngest is in bed).

I also want to change what I eat and drink. There are two main parts to this for me. The first is to shift to more vegatables and proteins and fewer servings of carbs. The second is to drink less alcohol. I suspect that this is a major source of extra calories in my diet compared to what my diet used to be.

One strategy I am using to keep on task with my lifestyle change is to keep a log in an excel file with journal notes and some simple measures about how I spend my time/energy between work, play, exercise and diet. So far it is working pretty well-- although I need to add in yesterdays entry, but I have a bit more than a week build up already. It is really satisfying to see the data build up. (I construct a line plot reporting the 5 day centered moving average). I think it is really important to track ones efforts towards ones goals, not just the goal. That would be a major critique I have of the design of this webpage-- is that it records an outcome rather than the inputs and the outcome.

I suspect that many people would appreciate the ability to tally up their accomplishments (# of meals per day on target with diet, hours of exercise per day/week etc.)

My goals dont really focus on weight, but I entered a goal anyways. What I really want to do is be more healthy, gain muscle strength and a little of muscle mass, and lose a little flab on my belly. But I expect that my ideal weight is near where I am, I just have a great deal of effort to change how I live my life.
