I'm so frustrated with the way things are looking. I did the math and I have less than a hundred dollars to get me through the month and a million things to get to jump start this life style change.

I keep careful track of my carb intake and for some reason, I keep going over my daily allotted carbs. I'm allowed 18-22 carbs a day and already today I'm sitting at 15.9! I'm not even to dinner yet!!! But at least I figured out where I'm going wrong! And I just found out that I'm not allowed to have milk unless it's soy milk and I just can't afford that! Great!

There are lots of ways to save. I buy bacon in bulk, and save the grease in a container for later use. I get 10lbs for $18. You will be saving in not buying snacks & within a few days to a few weeks, you won't be hungry any more anyway ;) http://www.ruled.me/eating-keto-budget/ http://ketodietapp.com/Blog/post/2014/10/08/Keto-Diet-on-a-Budget-Meal-Preparation-Tips

just dont have any milk for a while. it will just set you back if your just starting out anyway. Do you have a meal plan your following ? Its really hard to wing it at 1st so maybe you can go to the library and check out the Atkins books, Mine has a 2 week meal plan. Just focus on cutting out the bad stuff 1st.. You can sub ground beef for almost any beef and chicken thighs instead of breast and iceberg lettuce is cheaper then mixed salad greens. Also, consider frozen veggies over fresh just until your able to and meatless Mondays or eggs and bacon for dinner or a Lunchtime omlet. I know life style change can be expensive... so feel free to PM .. Im pretty good with ideas..Good luck and hang in there,

What kind of diet are you on? Even diabetics can have 3-4 times that many carbs. You will have to eat mostly veggies that have a high water content but a diet so low in carbs does not sound healthy for the long haul. As an RN I question this. You can do it on $100 but you will have to budget. For myself I set out a monthly amount, divide it by 4.4 which gives a weekly spend. Most of my food budget goes to veggies, some fruits and a little meat.

@TheRMum, I can personally guarantee you that a ketogenic diet is perfectly safe (as long as you aren't a type 1 diabetic), and a healer for many people that have metabolic syndrome amongst other diseases. Read my bio. Have you ever thought that the SAD (Standard American Diet) is the reason diabetics stay diabetics in most cases? I've read known many online buddies that have completely off of insulin with this lifestyle. Our bodies adapt to the lifestyle (just the way our ancestors did), but it is a lifestyle not a diet.

This is a very nice watch if you're concerned, TheRMum. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=food+revolution+diet+doctor+youtube&FORM=VIRE1#view=detail&mid=C102B2A943E98E5BD1BAC102B2A943E98E5BD1BA

I eat a lot of chicken quarters, my local grocery store usually runs a 10lb bag on sale fro $2.90, that lasts me all week, sometimes longer. You can find tuna fish on sale for really cheap, too, and canned green beans. Once you're in ketosis you'll find that you don't eat nearly as much.

That is excellent advice from Philmck. I eat a lot of chicken and green beans too. Also, you might want to try unsweetened, vanilla flavored coconut milk.

I use heavy cream in place of milk. If you mean that you drink it, well, I drink water or iced tea plain anymore. It's been a year and a half since I've poured milk.

Hang in there. I know how difficult being on a low carb diet can be, especially during this time of year when one is always short on time and money. You could try some low cost-high protein options like canned tuna, trout, sardines and even canned salmon. Eggs are also low cost and very versatile. I also go for frozen vegetables and fruit instead of fresh because most of the time they are more cost effective. Love Trader Joe's, they sell a half gallon of almond milk for less than $3. Good luck!

Thanks everyone!!! Oh, and just so that it's out there in case I haven't said it already, I'm on the Atkins diet. I'm already starting to feel better so no complaints there. The one complaint I do have is the milk.... BUT I did learn tonight that if I'm lacking in my carbs then all I have to do is take a swallow of milk and not only does it satisfy my need for that creamy stuff but it also gives that extra push. I was just shy of my 18 carbs and I'm done eating for the night, a little swallow of my sons milk did the trick and now I don't feel so bad about not being able to have any. Next step, see how I like almond milk lol

I buy my organic soymilk at the Dollar Tree store; only a buck. It is hard on a limited budget to do low carb. You can find decent canned meat at the Dollar Tree or 99 cent Store as well.

Unfortunately high carb pasta rice and potatoes are cheap and filling, which is one reason many people living in poverty are obese. But chicken leg quarters are affordable. Dollar stores have canned veggies reasonably priced and canned meats as well. Almond milk and heavy cream are all I buy. Good luck!
