My Grandfather was within 3 month of being 100 when he died. He ate eggs and either sausage or bacon every day up until the last year of his life. I think they are just trying to make money off of cholesterol drugs. My son was on cholesterol medication for several years, but when I stopped buying him fast food 2 -4 time a week, it dropped to normal, and has stayed there. Fast food kills.

There you go. Fast food. Poison in a drive through line.

You only need to go as far as your vegetable oil.

Definitely, fast food and all the added chemicals kills. Fast food is loaded with them.

I agree completely with Wholefoodnut. Processed foods and most fast foods are chock full of preservatives, flavor enhancers, etc. Which is why its important to eat as much home-prepared, natural food as you can (shop the perimeter of the store, try to buy locally raised organic foods, etc). I notice, though, that when you look online, you'll find many articles and videos that complain that restaurants and food manufacturers add Sugar, Salt & Fat to their food products. That's like complaining that authors try to write interesting novels, or singers produce music that people want to listen to. The business of the food industry is to sell food, and they are going to produce food that people will buy. As an example, go into the frozen food section of any supermarket today (besides Whole Foods or Trader Jacks). You'll find an entire aisle of Frozen Pizzas and another of Ice Cream/desert. You might find a tiny section of frozen fruits and a 1/4 of an aisle of frozen veggies. The frozen fruit will mostly have sugar added and most of the veggies will be drenched in a "sauce" that's full of trans-fats and fake cheese. This isn't the fault of the store. They are merely optimizing their sales. Stores only make money by filling the shelves with products that people will buy and eliminating the items that sit on the shelves and don't move. Customers are voting with their pocketbooks. The more crap they buy, the more the store will carry. The less wholesome food they buy, the less the store will carry. Simple economics. It isn't the restaurant's or food manufacturer's job to make healthy food choices. That's our job. The fact is the world is choosing to eat at McDonald's and Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. They're slurping down Digornio frozen pizzas and Haggendaz Ice Cream. Any of these things won't kill you if you eat them once in a while. But making them a regular part of the diet is what has brought us to epidemic numbers of Type II diabetes, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The good news for us is this: People here on Fat Secret are being proactive. They are making changes in their lives to eat healthier and exercise more. They are making smarter choices and sharing the knowledge they obtain (as well as their experiences) with others. As a team, we all improve and have a much better chance of beating the odds and living longer, healthier, happier lives.

I have been on the Daniel Fast with my fiancé before we get married. It is ridiculous how many products have sugar of some kind. Vegetable broth, mustard, horse radish, tortillas including "raw whole wheat" ones in the health food section....so annoying.

Very interesting and I have a vested interest in it since I have CHD. I've been reading some of the information in the links you posted, which of course then leads to other links and info. Much to ponder. My LDL cholesterol is down to 66 which is very low and I was pretty happy about that. Wondering now if that low a number is good or bad. More reading to do.

Txsnwman, well said. Supermarkets carry what sells, however they seem to be carrying mere whole foods as time goes on. It amazes me looking in peoples' baskets the junk they buy. I wandered around a chain grocery store a few months back looking to see what they actually carried 99.9% I would not have purchased. I run into large supermarkets for specific items that they might have on sale or I know they carry. I tend to buy food at small ethnic stores, farmers markets, and a few locally owned stores that buy lots of local products and a restaurant supply store that has a good selection of organic foods and either kosher or halal meats.

Many wise words said! I like to cook from scratch, and done so since the kids where young, of course not all the time, but buying processed food didn't happen to often. Now a days, because of my lacto intolerance, and cross allergies to quite a lot of food, I def must make my own meals. What I found way to often was ie tinned soups where killers because of the salt contents. I 'died' of thirst afterwards. And, yes sometimes eating out isn't easy either. I struggle often with the high salt contents, as I'm used to a lot less in my home cooking. If, or when we do fall for a quick option, my intestines are bad for days. Home coking doesn't have to be expensive, time consuming or difficult. There are so many receipts on the web these days that anyone can find healthy choices which will suit the pallet, skills and wallet.

@wholefoods: FYI/Halal meat - there is controversy about the way these animals are slaughtered as to the cruelty inflicted. I don't know about the Kosher though. I know there is a special tax on all kosher or halal foods. Whenever you see the MK (made Kosher) logo, it means there's a religious tax.

Buffy. You're right. Of all the macros and macro bits, sugar is the only one that's been shown to fit the classical definition of addiction. TX. I was in a wallmart in Alberta a while back. It was in a smaller town, but I went in to buy some sliced meat and fruits and veggies. I found the canned food isles just fine, but couldn't find the fruits and veggies. I asked a woman who was shopping. She gave me a little condescending smile and said, 'Sorry dear. You'll have to go out the main doors and drive all the way down to the Safeway store'. My question? Why was SHE shopping there?

Thanks for the links NM! Interesting. TX Snowman...wonderful post, so true. Some grocery stores are carrying more "organic" produce, thanks to customers insisting on better nutritional choices. Shame that not all stores carry them. Can a consumer really trust the "organic" label? Compared to the other options, we don't have much of a choice. But we can choose to buy products without the sugar, salt, and other additives manufacturers use to "enhance" their products or add to the shelf life. We can, at least, make an informed decision based on the food labels. We can make the choice to do more home cooking and not to rely on fast food joints. FS has been a boon regarding info and food plans.
