Redporchlady's Journal, 17 June 2022

I just had all my yearly checkups with my heart doctor and oncologist and everything looks great. They said to keep doing what I am doing with my strength training. The oncologist also stated that strength training helps reduce the risk of breast cancer and I was diagnosed 8 years ago with Stage 3. They praised me for my age and not being on any medications! I also hit some Personal Best in the gym this week. I am on mid reps so that means I am doing 3 sets of about 10-12 reps. On my chest supported rows I hit a PB with 45# dumbbells and my deadlift with 125#. I struggle with my bench press so I am thinking about telling my trainer of a goal of 100# by the time I hit 60. That gives me over a year to accomplish. I am currently at 85# with 3 reps sometimes 90#.

Great news all around!

I was 51 when diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2003. Started walking consistently right away but was on and off with weights. Your lifts encourage me to level up - suppose that's the benefit of a gym workout. I workout at home. I have out grown my 18lb kettle bell on goblet squats. I'm 70 now and happy to be here still trying. Glad I read your post.

Mac_Rose - That is awesome you have been 19 years out from cancer! I walked a lot too but just could not get some of the weight off and joining the gym was the best thing for me. We have people in their 70's at our gym and they start out slow but it is amazing how strong over time everyone becomes. That is great you are still working at it and I hope to keep going as I age too!
